LYNDONVILLE, Vermont – The Castleton women's tennis team dropped their
first match in almost three weeks this afternoon, falling at Lyndon St.
by a final of 5-4.
The Spartans now move to 8-2 on the season, including a 4-2 record in
NEAC East play. The win is just the second of the year for the Hornets,
who now sit at 2-8 overall and 1-5 in conference.
The shorthanded Spartans were forced to forfeit two of the nine
matches on the day, giving the squad an uphill battle as they stepped
off the bus.
All five participants for Castleton played at a higher position than usual, with Jackie Lisak
leading the way at the No. 1 singles spot. Lisak took down Tina Boyce
6-0, 6-0 in her first top-flight match of the year, while Dianne Benedicto cruised to victory in the two spot, 6-0, 6-2. Kirsten Kruk
grabbed a win in third flight singles, winning in straight sets 6-4,
6-2. Lyndon's Alexa Richard and Carina Alden took fourth and
fifth-flight singles from Gabrielle Welch and Denise Clavijo in straight sets, while the Spartans were forced to forfeit No. 6 singles.
In doubles action, Lisak and Kruk teamed up for the first time this
season to take down Boyce and Greta Larson by a final tally of 8-0.
Bennedicto and Welch fell at No. 2 singles by a score of 8-2 to Nicole
Jones and Maynard. Castleton forfeited third-flight doubles.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday when they wrap up their
regular season conference schedule at Johnson St. Match time is
scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
