MEDFORD, Mass. – Castleton kept it close early but 10th ranked Tufts
pulled away midway through the first half on the way to a 23-5 victory
at Bello Field on Monday evening.
The Jumbos were strong in their season-opener as outshot the Spartans
46-8 and owned a 22-5 edge in draw controls. Castleton, meanwhile, did
score on to of their four free position shots but dropped to 1-1
overall.
Tiffany Danyow led the offense with one goal and one assist, while picking up two ground balls and
causing a pair of turnovers. Brandi Whittemore added one goal and one draw control while Brianna MacKay, Maria Ploof and Grace Johnson also scored.
Brigid Bowser led the Jumbos with six goals and three ground balls
while Caroline Ross added five goals, three assists, three draw controls
and three caused turnovers. Taylor Meek chipped in three goals and
three assists.
Tufts scored just 1:13 into the contest, but Whittemore answered just
minutes later to knot the contest 1-1. The Jumbos responded with four
goals for a 5-1 lead through ten minutes of action. They kept pushing
and stretched their lead to 15-2 over the rest of the half, with a goal
from MacKay providing Castleton's other tally.
In the second half Tufts continued to extend its advantage, and led
19-3 midway through the period. However, Castleton was outscored just
4-2 over remainder of the half, with Johnson concluding the scoring for
the Spartans.
Jumbo goalie Audrey Evers earned the win by making three saves and giving up four goals in 54:15. Castleton senior Meghan Els took the loss after making 10 saves while allowing 23 goals. Els also picked up four ground balls.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they host Western New England at 4 pm in Spartan Stadium.
