CASTLETON, Vermont – Green Mountain College women's soccer dropped its third North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest of the season with a 4-0 loss to Castleton University at Spartan Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Mallory Costello, Bronwen Hopwood, Kiley Baran and Eva Clark all
chipped in goals, as the Spartans captured their third straight victory
to improve to 6-5 overall and 4-0 in the NAC. Green Mountain,
meanwhile, falls to 0-7 (0-3 NAC) with the loss.
Costello opened the scoring in the 14th minute when the senior
attacker gathered the ball just outside
the box before dribbling towards
goal and slipping a shot past the keeper and into the bottom right
corner of the net.
Just over ten minutes later, Baran extended the lead to 2-0.
Clark delivered a pass to Baran in the middle of the box, and the
sophomore attacker finished a bouncing effort just inside the near post
in the 25th minute of action.
With just over one minute left in the first half, Hopwood
netted her third score of the year to push the Castleton advantage to
three. The freshman forward received the ball near the endline before
dribbling past a defender and into the box. She then delivered a
right-footed shot that clipped the crossbar and bounced into the back of
the net, making it 3-0 in favor of the hosts.
The Spartans opened the second half firing, with four shots,
including three on target, before Clark tallied her third score of the
season. After Shelby McLenithan slipped a pass
to Costello near the far post Costello crossed the ball to Clark, who
headed it home for the fourth score of the day.
Junior Jessica Binkowski picked up her sixth win of the year after producing her third shutout with three saves. Kim Simonetti (Salem, Mass.) took the loss for Green Mountain despite making 11 saves in 90 minutes of play.
The Eagles will next host Southern Vermont on Wednesday in non-conference action with first touch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
