NASHUA, N.H. – Persistence paid off for the women's
soccer team as Green Mountain posted a 2-0 non-conference win against
host Daniel Webster on Thursday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The win for Green Mountain (2-10) was its second straight while DWC slipped to 1-8-1 overall with the loss.
Although the two teams played even through a scoreless first half,
GMC was definitely the aggressor
creating several quality scoring
opportunities. However, the tremendous effort of Daniel Webster
goalkeeper Stephanie Evans thwarted each and every advance the visitors
generated.
Daniel Webster had a few chances on partial breaks toward goal, but
the Eagles' defense and keeper Kim Simonetti (Salem, Mass.) averted any
serious damage with solid defensive plays.
The visiting Eagles definitively outpossessed the hosts in the second half and finally broke through in the 67th minute as Martha Howe
(Sunapee, N.H.) drew a foul just outside the box and drilled the
ensuing set piece just over an outstretched Evans and under the cross
bar for the 1-0 lead and game winner.
The score remained as such until the 88th minute of play when Daniela Bono
(Mississaga, Ont.) iced it with a 25-yarder for the 2-0 final. Bono
struck a high shot that bounced in front of the keeper and caught her in
between as the ball bounced over her into the net.
GMC posted a 24-3 shots on goal advantage and finished with seven corner kicks.
Green Mountain's Kim Simonetti
(Salem, Mass.) picked up her second win of the season and first shutout
by making three saves. Evans made a jaw-dropping 22 saves in defeat for
the hosts.
Green Mountain visits North Atlantic Conference foe Colby-Sawyer on Saturday at 1 p.m.
