Men’s Cross Country Takes Fifth at Vermont State Meet

JOHNSON, Vermont – Castleton placed fifth in the Vermont State Meet for the second consecutive year on Saturday in Johnson behind a pair of top-20 finishes.

The Spartans had 111 points, just behind Lyndon's 91, as two Castleton runners finished in the top-20. Middlebury won the event with each of its top five runners finishing in the top-8. Norwich was second with 62 points while St. Michael's took third (88).

Sophomore Grandon Smith finished second among non-Middlebury runners and seventh overall with his time of 27:03.3. Senior Ben Girard came in 18th overall with his time of 27:56.5 while Jonah Lavigne was third among Castleton runners with his time of 28:43.

Freshman Alex Lauzon took 29th overall and fourth for Castleton (29:20.4) while Patrick Gilligan rounded out the top five with his 33rd place finish in 30:07.3.

The Spartans are off next weekend and return to action on Oct. 17 when they run at the Green Mountain Invitational.
