Women's Tennis Wins Fourth Straight NEAC East Division Title

NEW LONDON, N.H.  - The Colby-Sawyer College women's tennis team defeated Castleton, 6-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division Championship on Saturday afternoon.
 

The two teams have played each other in the past five championship matches with Colby-Sawyer winning the last four.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 14-2 and will play a few matches in the spring in preparation of playing

the NEAC West Division champion for the right to play in the NCAA tournament. The West Division champion will be decided in the spring. Castleton ends its fall season at 11-3.

The Chargers took a 3-0 lead in the match after sweeping doubles play. The No. 2 duo of Evelyn Miller (Smithfield, R.I.) and Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) got the first point of the match with an 8-0 victory over Kirsten Kruk (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Ciara Bannister (St. Albans, Vt.). The Chargers took a 2-0 lead shortly after with an 8-2 win by the No. 3 team of Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.) and Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) over Meg Susslin (St. Albans, Vt.) and Dianne Benedicto (St. Albans, Vt.). Colby-Sawyer made it a sweep when the No. 1 team of Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamsted, Conn.) and Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) dispatched the team of Jackie Lisak (Rochester, N.Y.) and Sara Novenstern (Chappaqua, N.Y.), 8-1.

Colby-Sawyer, needing just two points to claim the title, clinched the championship with wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. Ramsay, the tournament's MVP, defeated Novenstern in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 at the top flight. Miller got the match clinching point at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Bannister. Miller was named All-Tournament. Woodside finished her No. 2 singles match seconds after Miller. She defeated Susslin 6-2, 6-0 and was named All-Tournament.

Susslin and Lisak earned a nod to the All-Tournament Team from Castleton.

SEMIFINALS - Colby-Sawyer 9, Johnson State 0

Colby-Sawyer, the tournament's top seed, earned a 9-0 win over fourth seed Johnson State in the semifinals. The Chargers improved to 13-2 on the season and reach the NEAC East finals match for the fifth straight season. The Badgers finish the fall at 6-7.

The Chargers swept doubles action with their top duo of Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkahmsted, Conn.) and Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) defeating Annette Kaminski (Southington, Conn.) and Katherina Van Woerkom 8-0. The No. 3 team of Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.) and Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) also won 8-0 over Kali Covell (Hartford, Vt.) and Ashley Fogg (White River Junction, Vt.). Colby-Sawyer's Evelyn Miller (Smithfield, R.I.) and Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) put the Chargers' third point up with an 8-2 victory over Nicole Monick (Bennington, Vt.) and Jana Somero (St. Albans, Vt.) at No. 2.

Ramsay (No. 1), Woodside (No. 2), Miller (No. 3), Gemerek (No. 4) and Blanchard (No. 5) won their singles matches in straight sets. After not playing doubles, Christine Hill (Wallingford, Conn.) stepped in to play No. 6 and did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

SEMIFINALS - Castleton 8, Husson 1

The second seed Spartans of Castleton University defeated third seed Husson, 8-1 in Saturday's NEAC East Division semifinals. The Spartans will play Colby-Sawyer in the finals for the fifth straight season and improve to 11-2. Husson, who is in its first season, ends the fall with a 7-3 record.

The Spartans took an important 2-1 lead after doubles by winning at No. 1 and No. 3. Sara Novenstern (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Jackie Lisak (Rochester, N.Y.) won the top flight 8-2 over Katie Pratt (Rockport, Maine) and Meridith Blessard (Lincoln, Maine). Castleton's No. 3 duo of Meg Susslin (St. Albans, Vt.) and Diane Benedicto (St. Albans, Vt.) also earned an 8-2 victory over Elizabeth Adley (Rumford, Maine) and Kelsey Pelletier (Fort Kent, Maine). Husson was able to stay close in the match with an 8-3 victory by the No. 2 team of Charlotte Bednarz (Westport, Mass.) and Sarah Smith (Calais, Maine) over Ciara Bannister (St. Albans, Vt.) and Kirsten Kruk (Clifton Park, N.Y.).5785

Castleton came away with straight set victories at each of the six singles matches. Jackie Lisak did not drop a came in her 6-0, 6-0 victory at the third flight. Novenstern  (No. 1), Susslin (No. 2), Bannister (No. 4), Benedicto (No. 5) and Kirsten Kruk (No. 6) each earned wins.
