NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer
College baseball team won the first game of a North Atlantic Conference
(NAC) doubleheader with Thomas, 6-2, but the Terriers took game two,
5-4.
Colby-Sawyer is now 8-8 overall and 5-3 in the NAC. The Chargers will
travel to Castleton for a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for
last week. The Terriers go to 10-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
Thomas will step out of conference on Tuesday to host Colby at 4 p.m.
GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 6, Thomas 2
The Chargers erupted for five runs in the bottom of the third and never looked back. Sophomore
Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) had the big hit in the inning as he knocked in a pair with a double to right center. Senior Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.), sophomore Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) and junior Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.) had an RBI apiece.
Colby-Sawyer tacked on a sixth run in the bottom of the fourth when junior Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) knocked in Musco with an RBI single.
Thomas got a run in the next half inning on an RBI single to right field from freshman Zach Mathieu (Oakland, Maine).
Colby-Sawyer sophomore Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season after tossing six innings without allowing an earned run.
Jeff Dunn finished 3-for-3 from the plate to lead the Chargers.
Senior Derek Kane (Natick, Mass.) took the loss for Thomas after being
chased from the game after three innings with five runs on seven hits.
Kane led the Terriers with two hits.
GAME TWO – Thomas 5, Colby-Sawyer 4
Thomas opened the game with a pair of runs in its first at-bat. Senior
Nik Beeson (Manchester, N.H.) knocked in senior Arnee Benitez (Orlando,
Fla.) with a single to center and then later came around to score on an
error.
Jackson Musco
led off the bottom of the first with an infield single. He then stole
second and third and eventually scored on an RBI single to left from Jeff Dunn.
The visitors added two more runs in the second benefiting from three
stolen bases and an error. Junior Jordan Gibson (Marietta, Ga.) hit a
sacrifice fly to right, while freshman Isaiah Arana (Orlando, Fla.) had
an RBI bunt single.
Colby-Sawyer was able to tie the game in the third with three runs. Jeff Dunn knocked in Musco for the second time in the game and Doug Avellino scored on the same play on a throwing error. Dunn then scored on a sacrifice fly from Brendan Thurber.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Chargers were threating with two men on and two out. Sophomore Joey Fenuccio (Keene, N.H.) hit a sinking fly ball to right field and was robbed by Isaiah Arana who made a spectacular diving catch.
Thomas put the game-winning run across in the top of the seventh when
sophomore Tristan Pena (Portland, Texas) was hit by a pitch with the
bases loaded.
Junior Dominic Esposito (Portland, Maine) went the distance for the
Terriers earning the complete game victory. He gave up three earned runs
on nine hits to get his second win of the season.
Beeson went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Thomas.
Sophomore Bobby Madden (Malden, Mass.) went the first five innings and gave up four runs, but only one was earned. Sophomore Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) took the loss after pitching the final two innings allowing one run.
Musco finished 2-for-4 for the Chargers with three stolen bases, giving him 13 on the season. Jeff Dunn added two more hits to give him five on the day. Doug Avellino went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
