MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Castleton softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games on Sunday afternoon at Middlebury College.
The Spartans led most of the way in game one, but Middlebury put up a
run in each of the final three innings to walk off with a 3-2 win
before cruising to a 6-0 victory in game two. Castleton falls to 6-8
overall with the losses, while Middlebury moves to 8-6 following the
doubleheader sweep.
Katie Gagne got the start in the circle for the Spartans in the first game of the day, going 4.2 innings
while allowing just one run. Jessica Babcock was a perfect 3-for-3 in the first game, while Brittany Brayman drew a pair of walks. Cassidy Tedeschi was shouldered with the loss, recording just one out in the seventh inning before the game went final.
Castleton cracked the score column in the third inning, as Krista Carcaterra
recorded the first hit and first RBI of her career on a two-out single
to left field that scored Babcock and gave her team a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans would push across a second run in the top of the fourth, when Timi Carone singled down the left field line to score Tori Swaine and double the Spartan lead to 2-0.
Middlebury would get a run back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to
make it 2-1 before tying the game in the sixth inning. Jackie Stern
doubled to right center to score Hye-Jin Kim to make it 2-2 going into
the final frame.
Babcock recorded a one-out single for the Spartans, but was stranded,
leaving Middlebury a chance to walk off in the home half of the
seventh. After Tedeschi got the leadoff batter to foul out, Kati
Daczkowski singled into left field to put the winning run on base. Erin
Giles stepped into the box and ripped a double to the fence in left
center, scoring Daczkowski and giving the Panthers a 3-2 victory.
Game two was all Middlebury, as the Panthers out-hit Castleton by a
14-2 margin. Carone and Gagne were the lone Spartans to record hits, as
Castleton had just the two base runners in the contest.
Tedeschi got the start and took the loss for the Spartans, going four
innings and striking out four batters while allowing three runs, all
earned. Carcaterra went 1.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs,
while Gagne closed it out for Castleton, recording the final out of the
sixth inning.
Daczowski led the way for the Panthers in game two, ripping three
doubles, while Emma Hamilton recorded a triple and drove in four runs.
Neve Stearns went the distance, allowing just two hits and striking out
four batters in the shutout.
The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to
Lyndon for a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is
slated for 3:30 p.m.
