Dartmouth Tops Saint Joseph's, 4-2, to Wrap Up Army Baseball Classic

Matt Feinstein belted his first homer of the season and Jonah Jenkins picked up his first collegiate win with a five-inning relief stint

CARY, N.C. — The Dartmouth baseball team wrapped up the Army Baseball Classic with a 4-2 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday morning, concluding the invitational by winning three of its four games. Senior Matt Feinstein belted a solo home run and drove in another to support strong outings on the mound from freshman Trystan Sarcone and sophomore Jonah Jenkins as the Big Green evened their record to 4-4 on the season.
Dominic Cuoci had two of the five hits for the Hawks (2-6), which dropped three of their four contests this weekend, with a pair of doubles while scoring once.
Sarcone got his first starting assignment and acquitted himself well over four frames, yielding just one run on a two-out base hit by Nate Thomas in the top of the first. He went on to give up four hits and walk four batters, but he also struck out four and pitched his way out of trouble, stranding seven Hawks on base.
Feinstein knotted the score at one with one down in the second by sending a pitch over the fence in left for his first four-bagger of the season and third of his career. But the Big Green weren't done as senior Steffen Torgersen sent a single back through the middle, took second on a balk by Saint Joseph's starter Matt Kennedy, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scampered home on a chopper to the pitcher off the bat of freshman Kade Kretzschmar for a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, Jenkins came on to replace Sarcone and was stuck with an unearned run that tied the score. Cuoci stroked his second double of the day with two outs and scored on a throwing error after a grounder to third.
As Jenkins was greeted with a run, so was the Hawks' reliever, Mike Falco, in the sixth, as he issued a leadoff walk to junior Blake Crossing. Torgersen singled him to third one out later, and sophomore Bennett McCaskill got him home on a fielder's choice to short for a 3-2 lead.
Feinstein tacked on an insurance run in the eighth with a single back through the box to plate Crossing, who was on second after a leadoff single and a wild pitch.
Jenkins (1-0) retired nine straight batters after the error in the fifth, and only allowed a two-out walk in the eighth and ninth before inducing a force out at second to end the game. The right-hander finished his day having given up just the one unearned run on one hit and two walks while fanning five to earn his first collegiate victory.
Falco (0-1) was tagged with the loss for surrendering two runs on three hits and a pair of walks to go with one strikeout.
Both Feinstein and Torgersen went 2-for-4, and Crossing reached base three times on a base hit and two walks while scoring twice.
Dartmouth has 10 days off for winter exams before heading to Florida for seven games during spring break. First up will be Wayne State on March 14 in Kissimmee, Florida, as part of the RussMatt Invitational. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
Notes: This was the first-ever meeting on the diamond between the two teams … the invitational was played at the training complex for USA Baseball … Dartmouth pitchers allowed just 11 runs over the four games … the Big Green finished with the best record at the invitational over the three days with a 3-1 record, followed by Tulane (2-1), Army (2-2), Fairleigh Dickinson (1-2) and St. Joseph's (1-3).
