PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College women's lacrosse team played its third game in four days Monday afternoon—falling 14-5 to SUNY Purchase in non-conference action.
The Panthers held just a 3-1 run with 10 minutes left to play in the first half, but the hosts closed out the frame with five unanswered strikes to bring a seven-goal lead into the break. The Mountaineers went on a 3-1 spurt to make it a 10-4 game with 11:27 to go—only to see Purchase finish strongly and stay ahead for the win.
SVC (0-3) is next in action on Friday with a 4 p.m. start at Keuka College.
Mountaineer sophomore Alex Safford (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) posted her first three goals of the year in the effort while senior Naya Cerda (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Megan Macdonald (Poughquag, N.Y.) each potted their first collegiate tallies. Safford and freshman Brittany Fulton (Bridgeport, Conn.) tied the team-highs of eight ground balls and five caused turnovers, and Safford added a team-best five draw controls to her line.
Southern Vermont senior keeper Sydnee Julian (Mexico, N.Y.) made nine saves in the loss (0-3).
Despite starting the game with only 10 players, SVC was able to control the ball for a majority of the first half. Still, the Panthers capitalized on their offensive opportunities to notch the first two goals of the day, and they never trailed after that. Macdonald beat the Purchase keeper to get her team within one at the 20:36 mark, but the hosts went on to end the period with six consecutive scores.
Goals went back-and-forth to start the next half—even after a second yellow card dropped Southern Vermont to nine players on the field for the remainder of the game. Safford sent her second of the day into the back of the cage with 13:43 on the clock, and senior Vanessa Kendall (Coventry, Conn.) then set up Cerda to make it a 10-4 Purchase lead. However, the Mountaineers weren't able to get on the board again until Safford netted a free-position shot with 23 ticks to play.
