November Schedule of Events at the Currier Museum of Art

Manchester, New Hampshire - On view now through January 6, 2013, the Currier Museum of Art presents Printmaking in the Age of Rembrandt which features prints by more than a dozen artists including Rembrandt van Rijn and his contemporaries. Visitors will explore the rich culture and history of the Netherlands in the 1600s when printmaking played a central role in the Dutch Golden Age and made art accessible to a much wider group of people than ever before.

The museum’s entrance is located at 150 Ash Street and free parking is available in the on-site lot. Museum hours are Sunday, Monday, Wednesday - Friday 11 am–5 pm, Saturday 10 am–5 pm, with extended hours on the First Thursday of each month until 8. Closed Tuesday. Admission to the museum is always free for children 17 and under and museum members, and every Saturday from 10 am–noon admission is free to everyone. The Currier is committed to providing the most welcoming environment for all visitors through full wheelchair access, FM headsets for sound amplification for all public programs, and a new mobile tour program with enhanced visual descriptions and captions for selected artwork in the collection. FEATURED PROGRAM FOR NOVEMBER

First Thursday LIVE! Meet the Artists David Lamb and James Aponovich
Thursday, November 1 from 5:30-7:30 pm
Witness the long-anticipated unveiling of White Mountain Breakfront (a.k.a. Lambovich IV) – the latest collaboration between painter James Aponovich and Furniture Master David Lamb! The artists will discuss the work at 6:15 pm and be available for conversation in the gallery after the talk. There will be live music by Celticadda beginning at 5:30 pm. Free for members, $10 for non-members. Seating is first come, first served.

Public Guided Tours Daily at 1 pm
Public tours are offered daily (except Tuesday when the museum is closed.) Explore Highlights of the Collection with an Introduction to Printmaking in the Age of Rembrandt Tours daily at 1pm. Public tours are free with museum admission.

Zimmerman House Ticketed Tours
The Zimmerman House Public Tour provides visitors with a 1.5 hour tour of the house with information about the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, the commission and design of the house, and details about the Zimmermans, who lived in the house for 36 years. Take a tour Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays at 2 pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30 am and 2 pm. Reservations are required. Free for museum members. $20 Adults; $19 Seniors; $16 Students; $8 Children 7-17. Tickets include admission to the Currier Museum.

Private Group Tours  Private tours of the Zimmerman House can be scheduled throughout the week and on weekends. While each tour is limited to 13 people, back-to-back tours can be scheduled for larger groups on Wednesdays. Private Zimmerman House Tours are available in English, French and Spanish! Focus Tour: Fin, Fur and Feathers: Animals in Art and Poetry
Friday, November 2 at 11:30 am and Sunday, November 4 at 11:30 am
Animals have the power to illicit strong emotions in us: love, fear, wonder. This focus tour will examine how animals – both domestic and wild – are depicted in the Currier’s collections and consider how and why artists and poets integrated them into their work. Free with museum admission.

Saturday, November 3 from noon-4 pm
Discover the right way to use photos as inspiration for artwork. In our time-strapped world, snapshots have become a “digital” memory tool but some artists have leaned too heavily on them as references for creating artwork. Learn fresh new ways to utilize the key aspects of the image while interpreting it to create your own artwork-not just a copy of a photo. Discussion and examples will include composition, line variation, color and technique. $75. From fine garments to funky street art, crochet is back! Learn this versatile and time-honored skill, which keeps creative minds and hands hooked! Great Impressions: Creating Tactile Clay Surfaces
Saturday, November 3 from 1-4 pm
Teens and adults, use found objects and everyday materials to create intriguing textures on clay. Integrate form and surface as you design and make tiles, plates, serving trays and decorative objects. This workshop is suitable for students of any level of experience. It is suggested that participants in this workshop follow up with a session of The Sumptuous Surface Workshop on Saturday, November 17. $60. Family Saturday: Creating in Clay
Saturday, November 10 from 10 am-1 pm
Spend some quality family time at the Currier the second Saturday of every month. Participate in hands-on art activities, go on a guided family gallery tour (11:30 am), visit the Discovery Gallery, or use a family gallery guide. Museum admission is free from 10 am to 12 pm. Children 17 and under and museum members always enjoy free admission.

Currier Museum Art Center Workshop: Etching
Saturdays, November 10 & 17 from 1-4 pm
Working with copper plates and with hardground resist, teen and adult students will use the same printmaking methods used in the etchings of Rembrandt, de Molijn and van de Velde, artists featured in the Currier Museum of Art’s special exhibition Printmaking in the Age of Rembrandt. Inspired by the Dutch genre landscape as a subject, students will explore their own interpretation of the Dutch landscape tradition using the flowing fine line characteristic of the etching process. In the second class, students will make proof prints from their copper plates using rich black ink on fine rag paper. $110. Second Sunday Jazz Brunch
Sunday, November 11 from 11 am-2 pm
Set aside the second Sunday of each month to enjoy brunch accompanied by live jazz. A League of Our Own: New Hampshire and the American Craft Movement
Sunday, November 11 at 2 pm
This one-hour documentary film celebrates America’s pioneering craft organization – the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. Currier Curator Kurt Sundstrom will speak briefly about the special exhibition New Hampshire and the American Studio Craft Movement and League Executive Director Susie Lowe-Stockwell will introduce the film. Explore the ways that glazes and ceramic stains can be used to emphasize and enhance texture on clay. Use bisque work from the Great Impressions workshop (November 3) or bring your own bisque fired, textured (cone 5) clay work. We will be using glazes that mature at cone 5. Focus Tour: Furniture in the Currier’s Collection and White Mountain Breakfront

White Mountain Breakfront, the collaborative work by NH Furniture Master David Lamb and painter James Aponovich, provides a perfect opportunity to examine the Currier’s furniture collections in greater depth. Come and learn about the rich traditions of furniture-making that have existed in New England for centuries. Free with museum admission.

About the Currier
