NEW LONDON, N.H.- The Chargers trailed by a pair of scores in the 38th minute against Great Northeastern Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Dean College, before getting three-straight scores including an overtime game winner by junior Nico Adornetto (Sanford, ME) to collect win #1 at Kelsey Field this season.
Dean raced out to a 1-0 lead, 5:34 into the first
half. From there, it looked like the Bulldogs had taken over the matchup, with another score at minute 38:05 to extend the lead to 2-0.The Chargers needed a big play to get back into this game. And they did. When 55 seconds later, senior Mason Galbato (North Easton, Mass) scored the first Charger goal of the game at minute 39:00 from first year Jaden Baros (Colorado Springs, CO) to cut the Bulldog's lead to 1.
After a pair of shots by Baros and senior Jonathan Martinez (Stony Point, N.Y.), the Chargers were awarded a corner kick at minute 67:15. After a Dean foul set the Chargers up with another corner kick that Adornetto took full advantage of to score the second goal for Colby Sawyer at minute 67:17 to knot the game 2-2.
Once the Chargers fended off two Bulldog corner kicks at minutes 71:18 and 78:08, the Chargers had a chance to end the game during regulation as with less than 20 seconds on the clock the home team had a corner kick. Dean College goalkeeper Bryce Antoch caught the ball in front of charging heads to end regulation.
The game entered overtime where the Chargers put together a final play that resulted in a game winning goal by Adornetto coming off an assist from Senior Timothy Driscoll (Framingham, Mass.) at minute 95:07 to give the Chargers the big overtime win.
Coaches Corner:
"We dug ourselves in a very big hole being down 0-2. Our boys showed a lot of courage fighting back to win the game. We have a fast turnaround to play Norwich tomorrow, but our guys will be ready."
