First Guides Teen Volunteer Program

First Guides Teen Volunteer Program
Celebrating 10 years of teen volunteers
Above: A first guide teen volunteer shows a turtle shell to visitors.
Holderness, NH – Volunteers of all ages help in many ways at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. Annually, volunteers donate over 8,000 hours of their time and teen volunteers especially, benefit from learning new skills, time management, and decision-making. Teens who volunteer have a better sense of their community and how they are a part of it.

In 2009, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center launched the First Guides teen volunteer program based on the adult docent program. During the summer, teens between the ages of 14 and 17 learn how to be a welcoming and informative presence on the live animal exhibit trail, often demonstrating animal artifacts alongside adult volunteer docent mentors with live animals. Over 100 teens have participated in the First Guides program since it began and many have returned to become docents after they turn 18.

Last summer, a Community Action Program was added to the curriculum. First Guides were introduced to several local environmental actions, including trail maintenance and invasive species removal tasks through Squam Lakes Association; the annual loon census through the Loon Preservation Committee; bat counts at the Science Center for the New Hampshire Bat Colony Count; and invasive plant removal at the Science Center. First Guides have the opportunity to record their experience and share their stories of community action through visual and written works. As a result of the Community Action Program, Volunteer Manager Carol Raymond was accepted into the North American Association of Environmental Educators ee360 Fellowship for leadership training and to further develop this aspect of the First Guides program.

For the 2019 season, thanks to a grant from ee360, EVP Marketing & Media will train First Guides on videography. The grant also covered the purchase of camera equipment for this purpose. Learning videography skills will enable teen volunteers to visually record their Community Action projects, present their projects to visitors, and to participate in formal presentations to their families and volunteers.

First Guide training will take place June 26, 27, 28, and July 1. For more information or to register please contact Volunteer Manager Carol Raymond at 603-968-7194 x 22 orcarol.raymond@nhnature.org

Amphibian Crossing - Detour Tonight 4/26/19

Amphibian Crossing - Detour Tonight 4/26/19

Every year, on the first warm, rainy nights of spring, thousands of salamanders and frogs make their way to vernal pools and other wetlands to breed. Many are killed when their journeys take them across busy roads. In order to protect these migrating amphibians, and to provide a safe place for families to witness the spectacle of the spring amphibian migration, the City of Keene will be closing a portion of North Lincoln Street to vehicle traffic tonight, Friday, April 26, 2019, from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.  This decision is based in part on more than ten years of amphibian migration data collected at North Lincoln Street by citizen science volunteers working with the Harris Center for Conservation Education’s “Salamander Crossing Brigade” program. For more information on this program please visit: harriscenter.org/salamander-crossing-brigades

If you are planning on stopping by to watch the migration keep in mind that migration will only occur after dark, and in wet weather. Don't forget to wear your rain coat and bring a flashlight with you (one per person) if you want to see the migration!

THE MAJESTIC Academy of Dramatic Arts Presents FORGIVEN A Fairy Tale.

About the show:

FORGIVEN A Fairy Tale By Brian D. Taylor  tells the inspirational story about the power of forgiveness is delightfully fun and full of heart.  This fractured fairy tale explores how kindness and forgiveness can be shown to anyone, even those who have done terrible things.  Elizadora is an outcast who is horribly misunderstood by her fairy-tale classmates — Cinderella, Goldilocks, King Midas, a bunch of feuding elves, and more!  When they all seemingly do her wrong, she turns against them all.  Her hateful heart transforms her into the famous fairytale wicked witch, as one-by-one she plots against her former classmates with tricks and curses.  Unwilling to allow an evil witch to curse the entire kingdom, her former classmates form a witch hunt, but when they eventually find and recognize Elizadora, they do something she could have never expected…  they forgive her and ask that she forgive them in return.  Their simple act of love and kindness moves Elizadora to right all the wrongs and give up evil for good.

Keene, NH: Spring Water System Flushing To Begin 4/28/19

Spring Water System Flushing

The City of Keene Public Works Department will begin its annual spring water main flushing program on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at 10:00 PM. The work will be done at night between the hours of 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM to minimize any inconvenience to our customers in the form of discolored water or traffic delays.  This work is expected to continue for approximately 4 weeks and end by Friday, May 24, 2019.

A list of specific streets to be flushed will be issued next week.

Routine flushing is required to maintain water quality throughout the distribution system. Flushing is the process by which water is moved through a water main at a high velocity so that a scouring action is created. The water and the associated build up in the pipe is then discharged through a fire hydrant. While the hydrants are open in your neighborhood, you may experience discolored water or a drop in water pressure. In the unlikely event your water service is interrupted or you are experiencing no water pressure please notify the Public Works Department (night phone # 352-2222) as soon as possible.

If you experience any discolored water, close all taps in your home except one, run your cold water for 10 minutes and water should run clear. If water does not clear up, close the tap, wait 30 minutes and repeat process again.   If you experience any laundry staining, please do not dry the laundry and contact Public Works at 352-6550.  We will give you a product designed to remove the stains.

If you have any questions regarding this post please call our office at 352-6550.
