Maroney wins vault gold, USA brings home five event medals overall at 2013 World Championships

ANTWERP, Belgium – McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All Olympia Gymnastics Center, became the first U.S. woman to successfully defend her World vault title at the 2013 World Gymnastics Championships at the Antwerp (Belgium) Sports Palace today. Simone Biles of Spring, Texas/Bannon's Gymnastix, Inc., was second on vault, making it the first time the U.S. has won the top two World vault medals. In addition, Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max, and Jake Dalton of Reno, Nev./Team Hilton HHonors (University of Oklahoma), captured the uneven bars and floor exercise silver medals, respectively, and Brandon Wynn of Voorhees, N.J./Team Hilton HHonors (Ohio State University), claimed the still rings bronze. Six U.S. gymnasts will compete on the final day of individual event finals at 8:30 a.m. ET (Watch Live).

In the vault final, Maroney was last up, and she nearly stuck her signature Amanar vault for a 15.966, with a 9.766 execution score. Her second vault, a Yurchenko half-on, front layout full off, earned a 15.483, which gave her a final average of 15.724 and the title. Biles also performed an Amanar as her first vault, scoring a 15.933. Biles executed a Yurchenko half-on to layout front half for her second vault and a 15.258, giving her a 15.595 average for the silver.

"It felt great (to be on the medals podium), said Maroney, who won her first World vault title in 2011. "It's been a long time since I competed on the World stage, and it felt very good to go out there today and do exactly what I needed to do."

"Vault is one of my best events," said Biles, who won the women's all-around title yesterday and will compete in two more events tomorrow. "I had one of my best friends there to support me, and we just went out there and had fun and did what we trained to do. It is exciting to hear the national anthem and see us on the big screen."

In the men's floor exercise final, Dalton performed an Arabian double layout to begin his routine. With a stuck triple twisting dismount, Dalton pumped his fists as he left the podium. His 15.600 resulted in the silver medal, finishing behind Japan's Kenzo Shirai. This is the first U.S. men's floor medal since Paul Hamm won the event in 2003. Also in the floor final, Steven Legendre of Port Jefferson, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors (University of Oklahoma), mounted with a front double full to double front and dismounted with a piked Arabian double front. His 15.366 tied him for fifth place with Diego Hypolito of Brazil.

"I am waiting for it to settle in," said Dalton right after the event. "I'm still a little nervous and shaky from competing, but it is a great feeling (to medal) and was fun to be out there. My dismount sometimes gives me trouble, and sticking it at the end was a key for me. This is one of the best (I've done), and I am going to keep it going forward."

On the uneven bars, Ross performed an in-bar stalder Shaposhnikova to Pak salto mount and stuck her double layout dismount that earned a 15.266. Biles once again was solid, working smoothly through her routine that included a piked and straddled Tkatchev. She scored a 14.716. Ross was second behind China's Huang Huidan. Russia's Aliya Mustafina was third, with Biles in fourth.

"I was really happy with my performance today," said Ross, who took second in the all-around last evening and will compete in two events tomorrow. "I went out and hit a really solid bar routine. And, I was happy to come away with the silver. (To get ready for tomorrow) I think I need to go back and rest tonight, especially because the competition finished late last night and we came over early today."

Wynn showed his signature strength moves on the still rings, including two inverted crosses and an Azarian Maltese. He also stuck his full-twisting, double layout dismount, and his 15.666 secured the bronze medal, the second rings medal for the USA. Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti of Brazil was first, with second going to Russia's Aleksandr Baladin.
"I am extremely proud and happy to come away with the bronze," said Wynn. "The final was amazing and I am I am proud to be here. I heard this is only the USA's second rings medal, which is an honor."

The U.S. gymnasts competing on the last day of event finals are: men's vault – Legendre; parallel bars – John Orozco of the Bronx, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors (U.S. Olympic Training Center), and Wynn; horizontal bar – Sam Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif./University of Michigan; uneven bars – Ross and Biles; and women's floor exercise – Biles and Ross.

USA Gymnastics names 2013 Women's World Championships Team

Huntsville, Texas – 2012 Olympic team gold-medalists McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All-Olympia Gymnastics Center, and Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max Gymnastics, are among the four women named to the U.S. Team for the 2013 World Championships, scheduled for Sept. 30-Oct. 6 in Antwerp, Belgium. 2013 U.S. all-around champion Simone Biles of Spring, Texas/Bannon's Gymnastix, Inc., and 2013 all-around bronze-medalist Brenna Dowell of Odessa, Mo./GAGE, complete the squad. The team was selected following the conclusion of the 2013 World Championships Team Selection Camp, held at the USA Gymnastics National Team Training Camp at the Karolyi Ranch, a U.S. Olympic Training Site, in Huntsville, Texas.

The 2013 World Championships is an individual championships, which means there is no team competition and each gymnast will be coached by her personal coach.

The competition schedule for the World Championships is: Sept. 30 – men's qualification, 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.; Oct. 1 – men's and women's qualification, 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.; Oct. 2 – women's qualification, 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.; Oct. 3 – men's all-around finals, 8 p.m.; Oct. 4 – women's all-around finals, 8 p.m.; Oct. 5 – event finals, men's floor exercise, pommel horse and still rings and women's vault and uneven bars, 2:30 p.m.; and Oct. 6 – event finals, men's vault, parallel bars and horizontal bars, and women's balance beam and floor exercise, 2:30 p.m. Based on the draw, the women are competing in the qualification round in: Subdivision 1, vault; Subdivision 3, uneven bars; Subdivision 4, floor exercise. The men's draw is: Subdivision 1, starts on parallel bars; Subdivision 3, parallel bars; Subdivision 4, floor exercise.

The members of the U.S. Men's Team for the World Championships are: Jake Dalton of Reno, Nev./Team Hilton HHonors (University of Oklahoma); Steven Legendre of Port Jefferson, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors (Oklahoma); 2013 U.S. all-around champion Sam Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif./University of Michigan; Alexander Naddour of Queen Creek, Ariz./Team Hilton HHonors (USA Youth Fitness Center); John Orozco of the Bronx, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors (U.S. Olympic Training Center); and Brandon Wynn, Voorhees, N.J./Team Hilton HHonors (Ohio State University). The remaining alternates are: Eddie Penev of Penfield, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors (Stanford University); and Paul Ruggeri of Manlius, N.Y./Team Hilton Honors (U.S. Gymnastics Developmental Center II).

The women's team was determined by the Selection Committee. The criteria considered when selecting the team included: results from the P&G Championships; hit consistency and results from past international and national competitions; D-scores for difficulty, and E-scores for execution; consistency; medal potential; composition of individual strengths among the team members; readiness to compete; etc.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – 2012 Olympic team gold-medalists McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All-Olympia Gymnastics Center, and Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max, are among the field of competitors expected to compete at the 2013 Secret U.S. Classic, scheduled for July 27 at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

In addition to Maroney and Ross, 2013 AT&T American Cup all-around silver medalist Simone Biles of Spring, Texas/Bannon's Gymnastix, and reigning U.S. junior champion Lexie Priessman of Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Gymnastics, are also in the field. Fellow U.S. Senior National Team members Madison Desch of Lenexa, Kan./Great American Gymnastics Express; Maggie Nichols of Little Canada, Minn./Twin City Twisters; Brenna Dowell of Odessa, Mo./Great American Gymnastics Express; Kennedy Baker of Flower Mound, Texas/Texas Dreams; and Peyton Ernst of Coppell, Texas/Texas Dreams, join the quartet.

The junior field has 46 athletes from 16 states, including all five members of U.S. Junior National Team: Nia Dennis of Westerville, Ohio/Buckeye Gymnastics; Laurie Hernandez of Old Bridge, N.J./MG Elite; Amelia Hundley of Hamilton, Ohio/Cincinnati Gymnastics; Bailie Key of Montgomery, Texas/Texas Dreams; and Polina Shchennikova of Arvada, Colo./TIGAR.

The event, which features some of the USA's top female gymnasts, is the final qualifying event for women's gymnastics for the P&G Gymnastics Championships, which determines U.S. champions and national team members.

Three gymnasts are among 20 most popular female athletes online for 2012

Three members of The Fierce Five℠ - Gabrielle Douglas of Virginia Beach, Va./Chow's Gymnastics and Dance, McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All-Olympic Gymnastics, and Aly Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan's American Gymnastics - are among the top 20 "most searched female athletes," according to statistics released by Bing. Not surprisingly, all of the top 20 women on the list are 2012 Olympians, and almost all of them took home medals for their countries.

Maroney was the highest ranked gymnast at number four, followed by Douglas at number seven and Raisman at 20.

Shawn and Derek's Final Dancing With The Stars With Fierce Five Dance

Last night Shawn Johnson & Derek Hough performed two dances in the Dancing With The Stars finale. In there first dance the two received 27pts out of 30 and 30pts in their final dance with the fierce five. The members of the fierce five are Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Jordyn Wieber, Kyla Ross and Aly Raisman. Fierce Five were there to help, support Shawn and Derek in their freestyle. At the end of the night Shawn and Derek had a total of 57pts.

2012 Olympians visit White House

Washington, D.C – Ten members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team for gymnastics, including The Fierce Five, got a special treat before the Washington, D.C., performance of the 2012 Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions – a visit to the White House. They met President Barack Obama in the Oval Office and visited some areas of the White House.

The Olympians who attended are Jake Dalton, Gabrielle Douglas, Steven Gluckstein, Jonathan Horton, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross, Savannah Vinsant, Jordyn Wieber and Julie Zetlin. USA Gymnastics President Steve Penny accompanied the team.

The gymnastics delegation brought several gifts for the First Family: leotards signed by Fierce Five for Sasha and Malia Obama; USA Gymnastics-branded workout attire and a hooded sweatshirt for the First Lady Michelle Obama; and an executive pen from the 2012 Olympic Games in London for the President.

The 10 gymnasts were unable to attend the official appearance hosted by the U.S. Olympic Committee because of the Kellogg’s Tour performance schedule. Men’s team member Sam Mikulak, who is in school at the University of Michigan, participated on Sept. 14. John Orozco was unable to attend today due to travel restrictions following surgery.
