Dartmouth Downs Wagner, 11-4, in Final of Three Road Contests

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Dartmouth men's lacrosse captured its first win of 2019 on Saturday, defeating Wagner by a score of 11-4 at Hameline Field.

The Big Green (1-2) were led by Ben Martin with four points from three goals and an assist, while George Prince was right behind with three tallies. Five other players found their way onto the scoresheet.

In net, Daniel Hincks played the first 57 minutes, making 11 saves to pick up his first collegiate win. George Christopher made his way in to the game for the final two minutes, making two saves during his first game of the season.

"I am happy with the effort and energy that we came out with today," head coach Brendan Callahan said. "The difference was our ride. We were able to cause some turnovers in the middle of the field, get the ball back to our offense and capitalize on those chances. Our defense was tough and did a good job of limiting the looks Wagner got at the cage. Danny was seeing the ball well in net. It was great to see Prince, Paul and Martin playing well together and finishing."

Dartmouth started the game well, taking the lead right from the beginning while not allowing the Seahawks to score a single goal. Prince opened scoring less than two minutes in and he and Prince traded goals until the Green had a 4-0 advantage after the first 15 minutes.

Prince would add one more just over a minute into the second quarter before Wagner got on the board. Dartmouth responded by scoring two more goals, courtesy of Harlan Smart and Peter Rizzotti, to give the visitors a 7-1 edge after two.

Trevor Ballantyne further increased the Big Green's lead three and a half minutes into the third and it took over 11 minutes for Wagner to be able to get one back, finding the back of the net with nine seconds remaining. With just one tick left on the clock, Matt Paul put Dartmouth back up by seven (9-2).

At 14:22 of the fourth, Paul was back with his second of the game, but the Seahawks turned things around quickly to score one of their own just seven seconds later (10-3). The teams would go on to score one more tally each before time expired.

After playing three consecutive road games to start the season, Dartmouth will finally get the chance to play at home, hosting UMass Lowell at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5.

Wilder Becomes All-Time Goals Leader, but Women’s Lax Tipped by #10 Mercy, 18-12

Senior Kristin Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) scored three goals to become the Southern New Hampshire University women's lacrosse program's all-time goals leader, but the Penmen were tagged with an 18-12 loss by 10^th-ranked Mercy College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Wilder also added an assist for four points. She moved past Emily Mongeau, who scored 190 goals for the Penmen from 2009-12.
• Fellow senior Alexis Felt (Manchester, N.H.) matched Wilder's output with three goals and an assist.
• Junior Merry Harrington (Peabody, Mass.) also potted three goals.
• Hunter Isnardi scored 11 goals for Mercy, including 10 in the first half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• After Mercy scored the first goal of the game just over three minutes in, back-to-back tallies from Felt and freshman Erin Gorton (Kennebunk, Maine) flipped Southern New Hampshire into the lead at 2-1, with 24:44 remaining in the opening half. Isnardi then scored four straight for the Mavericks, however, to give the hosts a 5-2 advantage with 16:03 on the clock.
• Wilder tied the record at the 15:12 mark with a free-position score and then, following another Isnardi strike, set a new all-time mark with 14:20 remaining to pull the Penmen within 6-4. Felt followed with a free-position goal to make it a one-goal game at 13:33, with Isnardi potting another just 26 ticks later.
• Felt set up Harrington to again get SNHU within one at 7-6 with 12:19 left, but Isnardi scored three straight to close the half, with Mercy on top, 10-6.
• Mercy began the second half with the first two goals of the game from someone not named Isnardi to extend its lead to 12-6 just under two-and-a-half minutes in.
• SNHU responded by scoring three of the next four goals, with Harrington, Felt and freshman Kelsey Long (Woburn, Mass.) trimming the deficit to 13-9 with 17:10 to play, but Mercy answered with three of the next four to regain the six-goal advantage at 16-10 with 11:22 remaining.
• Harrington struck again just over a minute later, but two goals from Mercy just 20 seconds apart all but sealed the win at 18-11 with 5:36 to go. Wilder closed the scoring with 3:22 left.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• Senior Leah Olansky (Bennington, Vt.) stopped three shots over the opening 32:26, while freshman Hayle Ashford (Atkinson, N.H.) turned away six of the 12 shots that came her way in the final 27:34. Mercy goalkeeper Emma Jacobsen made six saves.
• The Mavericks held a 43-21 advantage in shots, while the Penmen owned a 17-15 edge in draw controls.
• Mercy was 6-for-9 on its free-position opportunities, with SNHU going 4-for-8.

NOTES

• Wilder is now eight goals away from becoming the first 200-goal scorer in program history and needs 30 points to also break that all-time program record.
• Harrington now has four goals on the season and 56 in her career, while Felt's first two of the season give her 75 in three seasons with the Penmen.
• Long's goal is her fourth of the season, while Gorton's was her second.

NOTES

• The Penmen return to action Saturday, March 9 (1 p.m.) when they play host to Dominican (N.Y.) College.

NEC Softball Falls to Concordia College and Alverno College

CLERMONT, FL. – The New England College softball team dropped both decisions against Concordia College of Minnesota and Alverno College, 8-2, Sunday morning at Legends Way Ballfields at the PFX Experience.

How it Happened
Game One – Concordia College (Minn.) 8, New England College 2
Concordia got on the board in the early going, as they slugged three doubles in the top of the first inning, taking the quick 4-0 lead. Freshman Jasmin Alvarado cut into the deficit, as she launched a solo homerun in the bottom half of the frame.

The Pilgrims picked up another run in the bottom of the fourth, as Izzabella Phelps scored on a passed ball. Brooke Swarthout extended the Cobbers lead with a solo home run with one out in the top of the sixth. Concordia would put up three more runs later in the frame, as Maria Pake hit a three-run home run, three batters later.


Game Two – Alverno College 8, New England College 2
The Inferno started hot, as the scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. They would add two more runs in the bottom of the third, as Andie Vandertie doubled to left center, scoring one. Carina Jimenez drove in a run of her own, as she found a hole through the left side of the Pilgrims infield.

New England College scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning, as Rachel Senchal scored on a fielding error, and Destiny Helmedach crossed the plate on a double steal.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Alverno scored four runs one three hits, including a two-run home run to centerfield off the bat from Kaitlynn Schmick.

Inside the Numbers

• Without stealing a base in day one, but they swiped five without getting caught.
• The Pilgrims pitching staff collected six strikeouts in the first two days, before striking out 17 today.

Fifth-Ranked Mercy Charges Past Men’s Lacrosse, 18-8

Redshirt freshman Landon Goguen (Mattapoisett, Mass.) registered three points on a pair of goals and an assist Saturday, but a six-goal second quarter propelled fifth-ranked Mercy College past the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team on Saturday, 18-8.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS:

• Freshman Tristan Pietz (Dudley, Mass.) tallied three points in the setback with a trio of helpers.
• Sophomore Cole Jacobsen (Dartmouth, Mass.) collected three points of his own with a goal and two assists.
• Freshman Chris Valentine (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Stephen Dubois (Goffstown, N.H.) each found the back of the net twice for the Penmen.
• Jack Gibbons led all scorers Saturday with six points behind two goals and four assists for Mercy.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Mavericks jumped on the board less than a minute into the first when Jack Gibbons staged the hosts to a 1-0 advantage just 40 seconds into the contest.
• Dubois reset the contest with his sixth of the year and first of the afternoon with 11:33 remaining in the first before Mercy went on a four-goal run to close the quarter with a 5-1 edge.
• Southern New Hampshire stormed back into the contest in the first four-plus minutes of the second stanza to trim the deficit to a single goal. Jacobsen cashed in a feed from Goguen at 1:27 before Pietz set up freshman Pat Quinn (Billerica, Mass.) for his first career goal with 12:06 left in the first half. Valentine capped off the three-goal burst with a man-up marker from Jacobsen, and the Penmen trailed 5-4 at 4:30.
• Mercy answered SNHU's run with a four-goal barrage in less than two minutes to build a five-goal cushion at 9-4 with 7:01 to play in the half, and after Goguen stopped the bleeding at 9:38, JoJo Janavey potted back-to-back goals for the Mavericks.
• Trailing by six late in the first half, Pietz found Dubois with 14 seconds remaining to send the teams to the intermission with the hosts in front, 11-6.
• Southern New Hampshire's offense was limited to a pair of goals in the final 30 minutes, with Goguen finding the back of the cage on an extra-man opportunity 3:30 into the third before Valentine capped the game's scoring with 4:37 remaining.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

• Ryan Gibbons stopped 12 of the 19 shots he faced for the Mavericks in the opening 52:04 before giving way to Thomas Umano and Matthew Prasenski, who combined to make three saves on five shots.
• Freshman Alex Strugess (Derry, N.H.) recorded eight saves over the first three quarters before redshirt sophomore Neal Murray (Marblehead, Mass.) steered aside of the three shots he faced in the fourth.
• Redshirt junior Jack Healey (Hampton, N.H.) went 8-for-15 at the faceoff X for Southern New Hampshire Saturday, however, the Penmen were 10-for-28 on the day.
• SNHU converted on 4-of-7 man-up chances, including both of its second-half chances.

WHAT'S NEXT:

• Southern New Hampshire resumes its schedule on Saturday (March 9) when it opens Northeast-10 Conference play at the College of Saint Rose at 5 p.m.

Sexton's Seven Points Propels 'Cats Past CCSU, 16-4

Senior Attacker Finishes with Career Highs in Both Goals (five) and Points (seven)

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Catherine Sexton (Niskayuna, N.Y.) recorded five goals and two assists to lead the University of New Hampshire lacrosse team to Friday afternoon's 16-4 win against Central Connecticut State University at Arute Field.
 

The five goals and seven points are career highs for Sexton, who was also credited with four ground balls and one caused turnover.

Abby Cranney (Amherst, N.H.; three goals), Devan Miller (Bristol, R.I.; two goals, one assist) and Michele Smith (Wantagh, N.Y.; 2g, 1a) each tallied three points. Rylee Leonard (Coventry, R.I.; 2g) and Mickenzie Larivee (Amherst, N.H.; 1g, 1a) also finished with multiple points.
 

Issy Torres (Elmhurst, Ill.) the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, stopped 7 of 10 shots on goal in 37:27 to improve to 3-1; she also had two ground balls. Amanda Gottlieb (Canton, Conn.) played the final 22:33 and made one save with one goal allowed.
 

Jessica Lee (Southington, Conn.) led the Wildcats in both ground balls (five) and caused turnovers (two).
 

CCSU goalie Jackie Branthover was credited with 12 saves and five ground balls.

UNH extended its winning streak to three games to improve to 3-1. CCSU is 1-3.
 

UP NEXT

*  UNH returns to action March 3 (1 p.m.) at Fairfield University.

*  The Wildcats' next home game is March 17 (12 p.m.) against Iona College.
 

FIRST HALF

*  UNH quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead and scored the first three goals of the game. Leonard struck first wtih an unassisted tally at 28:09, then Sexton also netted an unassisted goal at 27:45. Smith continued the streak of unassisted goals at 24:26.

*  Carissa Brown trimmed the deficit to 3-1 at 19:14.

*  The Wildcats went on a 4-0 run to build a 7-1 advantage at 14:13. Larivee, with the assistance of Teagan Northrup (Longmeadow, Mass.), ignited the surge at 18:18.

*  Sexton scored at 17:24 and 14:13. In between, she set up Miller's goal at 15:06.

*  Morgan Stinton trimmed the Blue Devils' deficit to 7-2 at 11:14.

*  Leonard netted her second goal of the game -- once again unassisted -- to reestablish a six-goal margin, 8-2, at 6:33.

*  CCSU responded with a goal at 2:23, but the Wildcats struck twice in the final minute to take a 10-3 lead into halftime. Miller's second goal of the game came with 59 seconds on the clock, and Cranney finished a feed from Miller at the horn.
 

SECOND HALF

*  UNH scored the first five goals of the second half to build a double-digit lead, 15-3, at 16:21.

*  Cranney scored her second goal in a span of 48 seconds with a goal at 29:12. This time, she was set up by Larivee.

*  Smith, with the assistance of Sexton, made it 12-3 at 22:48.

*  Sexton scored consecutive goals at 21;08 and 17:45 to push the advantage to 14-3.

*  Cranney corralled Smith's pass and netted her third goal and 15-3 lead at 16:21.

*  Molly Coogan halted UNH's run at seven goals (dating back to the first half) when she advanced the score to 15-4 at 10:32.

*  Lily Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.) extended her goal streak to three games with a tally at 7:10.
 

UNH NOTEBOOK

*  New Hampshire matched its season high of 16 goals on a season-high 36 shots.

*  UNH committed a season-low 11 turnovers.

*  The 26 ground balls equaled the Wildcats' season high.

*  Elizabeth Blanding (Pittsford, N.Y.) recorded her first point of the season with an assist at 21:08 of the second half.

*  Smith's three points (2g, 1a) matched her personal best.

*  It was the first multiple-point game for Cranney (three goals).

*  Caroline Hernon (Hampton, N.H.) and Delaney Pratt (Lafayette, Colo.) led the 'Cats with two draw controls apiece.

*  Larivee, Miller and Sexton have scored a goal every game in 2019.

*  Sexton (11) and Larivee (10) reached double digits in goals.

*  Lee was in the starting lineup for her season debut.

*  Grace Purdy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Rachel Spaulding (Queensbury, N.Y.) both made their collegiate debuts.

*  The 16 goals were divided among seven Wildcats.

*  A total of nine 'Cats recorded at least one point; six had multiple points, including five with multiple goals.

*  UNH scored on 5 of 9 free-position shots. Sexton was 2-for-2, while Leonard, Miller and Powell converted on their only shot.
 

SERIES NOTEBOOK

*  UNH has a 2-0 lifetime record against CCSU. The Wildcats were 13-4 victors in last year's inaugural meeting in Durham.
