Paws For Pages

Concord, New Hampshire - Paws for Pages is a program designed to help kids improve their reading and communication skills. All dogs who participate in Paws for Pages are certified through Therapy Dogs International, and are calm, gentle dogs who love people. Millie, Mr. T and Clarabel will be available with their handlers in the Children's Room to listen as children read to them. Children who attend will each have 15 minutes of a dog's undivided attention to practice reading.

Call to Artists: Borders—illusions that constrain us

The Birds of Vermont Museum seeks works that share visions of birds, borders, and boundaries, now and into the future, for our 2020 art exhibit, Borders: illusions that constrain us.

What borders do birds encounter? Our maps do not typically reflect the territories they perceive, the ranges they travel, or the barriers they comes across. How do birds’ boundaries connect to human borders? To those of other species? Edges of things—physically, spatially, temporally— raise questions, not least of which is “Is it really there?” We ponder this, wondering, how do and will these encounters and connections alter us, birds, and the borders themselves?

The art show runs from May 1 to October 31 at the Birds of Vermont Museum. Art in any media, by new or returning artists, of any age, may be submitted. Visual, written, and multi-media works may be considered. Submit up to 3 pieces by sending no more than three (3) .jpgs showing them to museum@birdsofvermont.org. For non-visual works, feel free to describe it or send a short sample.

Entries are due by Monday, March 16, 2020.

McElroy is a native New Englander who studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has worked at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Skinner Auction House and Historic New England. Her work has been accepted into various juried shows around the United States and actively shows at local venues, such as libraries and cafes. She is a member of the Edward Hopper House in New York, Arts Wayland in Massachusetts and Monadnock Arts Alive in Keene, New Hampshire. McElroy lives in Massachusetts with her husband and two cats.

McElroy said she gravitates towards painting scenes of quiet moments with strong use of light and shadow. “These are images that I may see on early morning runs, midnight snacks in the kitchen or simple observations of everyday scenes. My favorite place to be is in the beautiful state of New Hampshire and I find endless inspiration for painting there from the sincerity of a small-town market to a delicately list sunrise in the mountains,” she said. Her painting is most influenced by Edward Hopper and Horace Pippin and the goal in her work is to create a connection with the viewer who can relate and share a similar feeling from common scenes that are actually special moments.
