Sports: Dartmouth Continues Strong Start with Win over Sacred Heart

Charlotte Cyr tied her career high in saves with nine to earn the clean sheet

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team continued their strong start to the season as they defeated Sacred Heart, 2-0, in nonconference action on Sunday afternoon at Park Avenue Field.

Dartmouth improves to 2-0 while Sacred Heart drops to 1-2.

"Excited again for our first win on the road and having a good transition from the Friday to

the Sunday match," said Stacy and Nick Branca Family Head Coach of Women's Soccer Ron Rainey. "It's always great to score an early goal so that was nice to see us take care of chances that were given to us in the first half."

Allie Winstanley and Sydney Brown scored the goals for the Big Green with Brown's being her first collegiate goal. Mary Lundregan picked up the assist on Brown's goal for her first career point. Charlotte Cyr put in another top performance with a nine-save shutout, tying her career high for saves in a game.

It did not take long for the Big Green to open the scoring in this one. Winstanley picked up a loose ball off a failed clearance from the defender just outside the box and cut across the middle before slotting a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner past the Sacred Heart goalkeeper.

The Big Green almost extended the lead in the 15th minute. Grace Martin played the ball in front of Brown, who took advantage of the empty space in front of her before firing a shot from just outside the box that rattled off the crossbar.

Just eight minutes later, Dartmouth doubled their lead over the Pioneers. Winstanley started off the play with a ball to Lundregan making a run down the left wing. As Lundregan made her way down towards the endline, she whipped in a perfect cross that caused a miscommunication from the Sacred Heart defense that allowed an empty net tap-in from Brown.

Sacred Heart started knocking on the door in the second half but were unable to find the breakthrough. The Pioneers crossed ball after ball into the box but were met by Cyr each time to stop the attack.

Rainey finished by saying "we wanted to control a little bit more of the tempo in the second half and that's something good for us to work on as we go into our trip to Michigan."

Next up for Dartmouth is a trip to Michigan for a Thursday night matchup with Michigan State. The game will be available to stream on the Big Ten Network.

Notes: This marks the fourth straight victory for the Big Green over the Pioneers. This is the sixth straight season in which Dartmouth started off 2-0.
