NASHUA, N.H. — Graduate student Lyric Grumblatt made history on Saturday afternoon, surpassing head coach Deanna Purcell '15 as the Rivier women's basketball program's all-time leading scorer, helping the Raiders to a 73-51 victory over New England Col. in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Muldoon Center. Purcell's record of 2,192 points had previously stood since the end of the 2014-15 campaign.

DURHAM, N.H  –  The University of New Hampshire men's basketball team defeated Binghamton, 79-72 on Saturday afternoon from Lundholm Gymnasium.
 

Junior guard Sami Pissis (Paris, France) scored his UNH career-high of 30 points and recorded three rebounds for the Wildcats. Junior guard Anthony McComb III (Dayton, Ohio) added 13 points for the 'Cats.

Sports: Women’s Soccer Slips Past Mercy, 1-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (August 28, 2022) -- A ninth-minute goal was all that was in it on Sunday at Jess Dow Field, as the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team completed a perfect opening weekend with a 1-0 win over Mercy. Junior Anna Crapanzano (Milano, Italy) provided the lone goal for the Ravens on the second and final day of the SCSU Women's Soccer Classic, hosted by Southern Connecticut State.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-0-0. Mercy, which received votes in the preseason national poll, opens its season at 0-1-0, after its game on Friday was canceled due to inclement weather.

Building Bridges Through Basketball: Peace in Israel’s Younger Generation

Just days before President Barack Obama set off for his historic trip to Israel and the Palestinian Territories, 16 Jewish and Arab-Israeli teens traveled to the United States to engage their American counterparts and highlight the strong relationship between the U.S. and Israeli people. Using the sport of basketball, these young people have focused their efforts on peace-building and cooperation -- two themes central to President Obama's visit.

Engaging young people is a strategic priority for the United States. After all, today's youth are tomorrow's leaders. And, sports are a vehicle in which we can engage young people from around the world on the court, in the classroom, and in their communities.

During this international exchange, these young Israelis -- whom I first met at the Peres Center for Peace during a recent trip to Israel -- engaged with their American counterparts in Columbus, Ohio and Washington, D.C. Teaming up with our private-sector partner World Learning, we were able to exchange ideas, hopes, and aspirations on ways in which our countries can work together in the future.

Seeing these young faces and watching them interact with America's youth -- on the basketball court and in the community -- sends a clear signal that together through greater understanding we can all seek peace and cooperation that builds a better world for all.

New York- Following are UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s remarks, as prepared for delivery, at the inauguration of the Olympic Torch Display in New York on 18 December:

This exhibit brings back many powerful emotions.  July 26 was a memorable and emotional day.  I spent the morning in Srebrenica, with mothers of those slain in the horrendous massacre.  Later that same day I was in London, where the joy of our common humanity was evident in the faces of all the spectators and competitors I saw.  The swing of emotions, and the sense of common purpose in both places, was deeply moving, both personally and because of the work of the United Nations.
I ran with the torch and, later, proudly carried the Olympic banner in the stadium.  Of the eight outstanding personalities who shared that honour with me, no less than four were acknowledged for their United Nations connections.  The great Muhammad Ali, a former Messenger of Peace, and musician Daniel Barenboim, who serves in that role now; Haile Gebrselassie, a Goodwill Ambassador for UNDP [United Nations Development Programme] in Ethiopia, and Marina Silva, the former Environment Minister of Brazil who is a UNEP [United Nations Environment Programme] Champion of the Earth.

That the organizers chose to honour the United Nations so visibly spoke volumes to me about the close links between the Olympic Movement and the United Nations.  Those ties go far beyond shared principles and ideals.  They translate into everyday collaborations that are helping improve the lives of people in need in all regions.  For these Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees collected sports equipment for refugee camps around the world.

The “International Inspiration” social legacy programme, implemented primarily by UNICEF, has reached millions of people in 20 countries through Sport for Development and Peace, and education programmes.  UNESCO [United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization], the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime [UNODC], UNAIDS [Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS] and the World Health Organization (WHO) also collaborated with the organizers or held events during the Games.
