Service Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week: Lucy Chertock and Matt Vezza

DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman outside hitter Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) of the University of New Hampshire volleyball team and sophomore quarterback Matt Vezza (Elmhurst, Ill.) of the UNH football team were named the Service Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week on Sept. 3.
 
Lucy Chertock was named both Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week by America East after leading the Wildcats to a perfect 3-0 record in UNH's annual Holly Young Invitational at Lundholm Gym on Aug. 29-30.
 
In her collegiate debut weekend, Lucy made an immediate and dominant impact across all three matches, as she totaled 47 kills, 22 digs and 10 blocks.

On Aug. 29, Lucy contributed seven kills, seven digs, two blocks and was a steady presence in the back row as UNH swept Holy Cross in straight sets.
 
In Saturday's five-set thriller versus Saint Peter's, Lucy exploded for a match-high 21 kills, adding eight digs and four blocks. She capped the weekend with 19 kills and seven digs in another five-set victory to help UNH defeat Northeastern by overcoming a 2-1 deficit for the second time that day.
 
The UNH volleyball team returns to action Sept. 6-7 at the Penn State Invitational. The 'Cats play #7 Kentucky (Sept. 6) and #2 Penn State (Sept. 7). The Wildcats' next home match is Sept. 16 vs. Merrimack. 
 

 
Matt Vezza threw for a pair of touchdowns and a 2-point conversion and also ran for his first career TD to lead UNH to a 27-10 win at NC Central on Aug. 30. In his first career start, he recorded career highs for passing yards (186), passing TDs (two) and total touchdowns (three).
 
Matt's first touchdown pass of the season gave UNH a 10-0 lead with three minutes left in the first half. His second passing TD and rushing score came 3:20 apart in the third quarter to extend the Wildcats' lead to 24-3.
