MYSTIC SEAPORT NAMES 22ND CAPTAIN OF THE CHARLES W. MORGAN

Mystic, Connecticut - Mystic Seaport named Richard “Kip” Files of Rockland, Maine, as the new captain of the 19th-century whaleship Charles W. Morgan, which will venture back to sea next summer to visit historic ports of New England celebrating the importance of America’s maritime heritage.
At the conclusion of a five-year, multi-million dollar restoration at the Museum’s Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard, Files will take the Morgan on an approximately three-month voyage from May to August 2014 in Southern New England waters.
“This is an extraordinary undertaking and it will be exciting to take this ship back to sea to discover and share what it was like to operate a wooden whaleship as they did throughout the 19th century,” Files said.
As the owner and captain of the 132-foot, three-masted schooner Victory Chimes out of Rockland, Files is no stranger to sailing large ships without an engine. He is also the primary captain of the 207-foot barque Elissa, owned and operated by the Galveston Historical Foundation and Texas Seaport Museum. Files holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master Ocean License for Inspected Passenger Vessels of up to 1,600 Gross Tons. He has been a master of traditional sailing vessels since 1978. He also served on the boards of Tall Ships America (formerly the American Sail Training Association) and the Ocean Classroom Foundation.
“There are very few people in the world with the knowledge and experience of traditional square-rigged sailing necessary to do this job. Kip is one of those people and we are confident we have found the right person to lead the ship on her 38th Voyage,” said Steve White, president of Mystic Seaport.
Files will arrive at Mystic Seaport to start work on November 11. He will be charged with hiring the Morgan’s crew and preparing and equipping her for the 38th Voyage. After a period of fitting-out and sea trials based in New London, Conn. Files will sail her to Newport, Vineyard Haven, New Bedford, and Boston. The Morgan will also venture into the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and participate in the centennial celebration of the Cape Cod Canal. The voyage will be a commemoration of the role of the sea in the history of America and an appreciation of our changing relationship with the natural world.
“For someone who has made his living with traditional vessels this is quite an honor,” Files said. “The 38th Voyage will be one of the most significant maritime events in my lifetime, and I feel privileged and humbled to be part of this historic voyage.”
As the 22nd captain of the National Historic Landmark and the last wooden whaling ship in the world, Files takes his responsibility for the well-being of the vessel and the safety of the crew very seriously.
“The most important goal is to achieve a safe voyage for the ship and all who sail on her,” Files said. “The Charles W. Morgan is an irreplaceable artifact of America’s maritime heritage and her well-being is paramount.”
At 113-feet long, the Morgan was launched in New Bedford, Mass. in 1841 and had a whaling career of 80 years and 37 voyages that spanned the far reaches of the globe. While her original cargo was whale oil and bone, now her cargo is knowledge. Commanding this American icon and presenting her to the American people as a living portal into an important chapter of our history is an honor, Files said.
Although he’s sailed in oceans across the globe for close to half a century, Files said he hasn’t yet experienced a favorite sail. However, the Morgan’s 38th Voyage is “going to be a quite the adventure,” he said.

USA Gymnastics recognizes restaurants participating in Taste of the Championships
Hartford, Connecticut - Six downtown Hartford, Conn., restaurants participated in the "Capital City's Taste of the Championships," held during the 2013 P&G Gymnastics Championships staged at the XL Center this week. Each of the six restaurants created a special, healthy entrée that was featured on the menu during P&G Gymnastics Championships week.A panel of judges visited the restaurants during a three-day span. The panel of judges varied each day and included legendary coach Bela Karolyi, 1984 Olympic speedskating gold-medalist Johann Olav Koss, Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra, 2004 Olympic all-around champion Carly Patterson, 1984 Olympic gold-medalist and USA Gymnastics Board Chairman Peter Vidmar, and USA Gymnastics President Steve Penny.
The votes are in, and below are the awards, which were announced during the final day of competition of men's gymnastics by 1984 Olympic gold-medalist Peter Vidmar, Penny and Segarra. The awards bearing an individual's name represent his/her favorite dish.

BREAKING SPORTS NEWS: Biles wins women's all-around at 2013 P&G Championships
Hartford, Connecticut - 2013 AT&T American Cup silver medalist Simone BIles of Spring, Texas/Bannon's Gymnastix, won the senior women's all-around title at the P&G Gymnastics Championships at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Biles posted an all-around total of 120.450 points, followed closely by 2012 Olympic gold-medalist Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max, at 120.250 points, and Brenna Dowell of Odessa, Mo./Great American Gymnastics Express, with 116.550 points.
Biles, who earned silver medals on all four individual events, began her competition on balance beam with a solid routine that included a flip flop, flip flop, full-twisting double back dismount for 15.000 points. On floor, she smiled and soared through a double-twisting double back, a double layout and a full-twisting double tuck for 14.950 points. In the third rotation, Biles landed a clean Amanar, scoring 15.800 points. Biles finished the meet on uneven bars, scoring 14.200 points for a routine that included a Weiler-half to Maloney combination, a piked Tkatchev and a full twisting double tuck dismount.
With four cleanly executed routines, Ross won the all-around silver medal. On floor, Ross earned a score of 14.500 points for a routine that included a high Arabian double front to stag jump for her first pass and a double tuck dismount. In the second rotation, Ross' double-twisting Yurchenko earned 15.300 points. Ross won the national title on uneven bars with a smoothly swung routine featuring precise handstand positions for a two-day total of 30.950 points, two points ahead of her closest competitor. On balance beam, Ross closed the meet with an impressive routine that included a switch ring leap and a double tuck dismount, winning her second national title with a combined score of 29.950 points.

Hartford, Connecticut - Bailie Key of Montgomery, Texas/Texas Dreams, won the junior women's all-around with a score of 118.550 points after the second of two days of competition at the P&G Gymnastics Championships at Hartford's (Conn.) XL Center. Lauren Hernandez of Old Bridge, N.J./MG Elite, won the silver medal with 116.650 points, and Amelia Hundley of Hamilton, Ohio/Cincinnati, finished third with 113.750 points. Women's competition continues tonight with the final day of the senior women's division, which includes 2012 Olympic team gold-medalists McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif./All-Olympia, and Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif./Gym-Max.
Key began her competition on the floor exercise, posting a combined score of 29.750 points that earned her the event title. Key tumbled four clean passes: an Arabian double front to stag jump; one-and-a-half twist through to a triple twist; front double full punch front; and a double pike dismount. She also showed perfect positions in her leaps. In the second rotation, Key vaulted a double-twisting Yurchenko for 14.750 points. On bars, Key improved her performance from the first day of competition with a Stalder-full to full-twisting double tuck dismount for 14.100 points and fourth place in the event rankings at 28.050. Key finished her competition on the balance beam, hitting a flip flop, flip flop layout series and a triple full dismount for a two-day total of 30.900 points and the beam title.
Hernandez, who was 21st at the 2012 U.S. Championships, soared to second in the all-around with eight solid routines. In the first rotation, Hernandez commanded the crowd's attention on floor exercise, committing to her choreography and cleanly landing her tumbling passes for a two-day total of 29.100 points

Bailie Key born on March 16th, 1999 is an American artistic gymnast. She was a member of the gold medal winning team at the 2012 City of Jesolo Trophy.

Monarchs Offense Goes Silent In Bridgeport
Manchester falls to Bridgeport 4-0
Bridgeport, Connecticut - The Manchester Monarchs were shutout by goaltender Anders Nilsson and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-0, at Webster Bank Arena on Saturday night.
Manchester (7-6-0-1) ranks second in the Atlantic Division with 15 points. Bridgeport (9-4-0-0) is in second place in the Northeast Division with 18 points.
"Tonight we struggled again," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "I definitely want to see this young bunch play with some more emotion and more push back when we stumble. We'll need ot be stronger on the puck and become better in our own end. Teaching the nuances of the game and finding consistency are our biggest challenge right now. Everyone will be held accountable. Good teams look for solutions and the demands won't go away in regard to the necessary sacrifices that are clearly expected within the organization. It's important we take ownership in our efforts. Improvements will show as we embrace the way we need to play."
Bridgeport opened the scoring at 13:45 of the first period with a goal by center Nino Niederreiter. Defenseman Jordan Hill wristed a shot from the center point that Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones stopped but the rebound landed in front of the net. Right wing David Ullstrom tipped a bouncing puck to Niederreiter who poked it past Jones for his eighth goal of the season and the eventual game-winning goal.
The Sound Tigers took a 2-0 lead on the power play at 8:41 of the middle stanza with a goal by defenseman Jon Landry. Right wing Max MacKay played the puck back to Landry at the top of the left wing face-off circle. Landry fired a slap shot that deflected off a Monarchs defenseman’s stick and into the net high on the glove side of Jones. Defenseman Aaron Ness also tallied an assist Landry’s second goal of the season.
Bridgeport opened up a 3-0 lead as center Matt Watkins scored his second goal of the season. Right wing Blair Riley played the puck from the right wing corner back to Landry at the right point. Landry took a slap shot that was tipped by Watkins in front of the net beating Jones at 14:52 of the third period.
The Sound Tigers finished the scoring on the power play as Watkins scored his second goal of the game pushing the score to 4-0 at 19:23 of the third period. Hill took a feed from MacKay at the left point. Hill skated toward the center point as he took a slap shot that whistled wide of the Monarchs goal. Hill’s shot caromed off the end boards to the right doorstep where Watkins shot the puck into the net for his third goal of the season.
Jones (6-5-1) took his fifth loss of the season making 25 saves on 29 shots. Nilsson (3-0-0) earned his first shutout and third victory of the season stopping all 25 shots faced.
Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Bridgeport went 2-for-5 with the man advantage.
Notables: The Monarchs are 0-3-0-0 in their last three games…The Monarchs power play is 0-for-22 in their last five games…Former Monarchs defenseman Jordan Hill tallied two assists…Left wing Marc-Andre Cliche appeared in his 298th American Hockey League game and 299 professional game.
