Rindge, New Hampshire – Franklin Pierce University professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program and one of his recent doctoral students have distinguished themselves by receiving two prestigious awards. Josh Cleland, P.T., Ph.D., received the Rose Award: Rose Excellence in Research Award for the Best Research Article of 2013 published in the field of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy. Cleland also received the John Medeiros Award Winning Paper of 2012 from the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy (JMMT). Cleland’s recent Ph.D. student, Louie Puentedura from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, was the lead on both award-winning papers; Cleland sits on Ph.D. committees for students from universities around the world.
The Orthopaedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association research committee considers all published research papers that examine issues related to orthopaedic physical therapy in consideration for the esteemed Rose Award. Cleland and Puentedura's paper, “Development of a Clinical Prediction Rule to
Identify Patients with Neck Pain Likely to Benefit from Thrust Joint Manipulation to the Cervical Spine” garnered the award.
The editors and deputy editors of JMMT select one paper each year for recognition as the best publication in their journal for the Medeiros Award. The award-winning JMMT article by Cleland and Puentedura is, "Safety of cervical spine manipulation: are adverse events preventable and are manipulations being performed appropriately? A Systematic Review."
