Amphibian Crossing - Detour Tonight 4/26/19

Amphibian Crossing - Detour Tonight 4/26/19

Every year, on the first warm, rainy nights of spring, thousands of salamanders and frogs make their way to vernal pools and other wetlands to breed. Many are killed when their journeys take them across busy roads. In order to protect these migrating amphibians, and to provide a safe place for families to witness the spectacle of the spring amphibian migration, the City of Keene will be closing a portion of North Lincoln Street to vehicle traffic tonight, Friday, April 26, 2019, from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.  This decision is based in part on more than ten years of amphibian migration data collected at North Lincoln Street by citizen science volunteers working with the Harris Center for Conservation Education’s “Salamander Crossing Brigade” program. For more information on this program please visit: harriscenter.org/salamander-crossing-brigades

If you are planning on stopping by to watch the migration keep in mind that migration will only occur after dark, and in wet weather. Don't forget to wear your rain coat and bring a flashlight with you (one per person) if you want to see the migration!

'Cats Scratch Back But Come Up Short In Slugfest

New Hampshire falls out of first for first time since July 14 after 10-9 loss in Portland

PORTLAND, ME - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays) lost a slugfest against the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) Wednesday night at Hadlock Field, a 10-9 defeat that featured a combined 29 hits. With the loss and a Trenton Thunder (Yankees) win in Altoona earlier tonight, the 'Cats and the Thunder are tied for first in the Eastern Division with five games to play, but Trenton owns the tiebreaker.

Trailing 8-3 after four, New Hampshire used a four-run fifth to make it close. Bo Bichette started the inning with a single and Max Pentecost followed with a two-run home run. Santiago Espinal matched the effort later in the frame, launching his first-career Double-A home run over the 37-foot Maine Monster in left field to plate a pair and make it 8-7.

After a scoreless sixth, Portland got two runs (one earned) in the seventh to go up 10-7.

In the eighth, Forrest Wall notched a lead-off single and scored on a Jon Berti triple. Berti came home on a wild pitch as the 'Cats scratched back within one.

Down 10-9 in the ninth, Espinal worked a walk to start the stanza and moved to second on a passed ball during the next at-bat. Despite having the tying run in scoring position with no outs, New Hampshire failed to bring him in and lost 10-9.

Espinal led the way on offense with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI. Bichette, Pentecost, Wall and Andrew Guillotte logged two hits apieve while Danny Young twirled two scoreless frames of relief. Travis Bergen put up a zero in the ninth to extend his scoreless innings streak to 20 frames, a season-high for the Fisher Cats.

New Hampshire concludes the regular season road schedule tomorrow night in Portland. RHP Hector Perez will go for the 'Cats while LHP Kyle Hart gets the nod for the Sea Dogs. Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. with the Fisher Cats Pregame Show and continues with first pitch at 7:00 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.

The Fisher Cats return home Friday - Monday for a Labor Day Weekend series against the Hartford Yard Goats (Colorado Rockies).

The Eastern League Playoffs begin on Wednesday, September 5. With a two-game lead on second-place Trenton, the Fisher Cats magic number to clinch home field advantage is seven. With home field, New Hampshire would host Round 1 playoff games on Friday, September 7, as well as Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9 if necessary.

Shovels & Rope to Appear at The Colonial

With the support of Chutters and Sierra Nevada Brewing, the newly renovated Colonial Theatre in Bethlehem, NH is pleased to present a rising star on the indie band circuit, Shovels & Rope, Sunday, September 2.

An American folk duo from Charleston, South Carolina Shovels & Rope is composed of husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. Combining threads from their individual solo careers, Shovels and Rope combines elements of country and punk rock to create its own brand of raw, American roots music. The duo originally came together when they collaborated for a one-off album, “Shovels and Rope” in 2008. A year later, the two artists married, and today boast a celebrated discography.

Highlighted in Rolling Stone’s Pickathon 2018: 10 Best Things We Saw at Portland Festival, “Shovels & Rope filled out Mt. Hood, Pickathon’s largest stage, with a huge sound that was even tougher live than it comes across on record. Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst seemed markedly larger than a duo, a trick accomplished by frequently switching instruments and sometimes bashing away on drums with a furious purpose. Yet when the volume was lowered and the songs turned intimate, Shovels & Rope retained a sweep that was nearly cinematic.”

General Admission tickets for the 8 PM LIVE! at The Colonial performance are $39; Colonial, Catamount Arts and St. Kieran’s Community Center for the Arts, Gem Theater and Loading Dock members $34. Reserved Front & Centers seats (available on-line only) are $51. Tickets are available in advance while they last at Maia Papaya Cafe, Bethlehem, or Catamount Arts, St. Johnsbury or www.BethlehemColonial.org. The doors open at 7 PM with refreshments including beer and wine on the patio. For more information about this or upcoming live events find The Colonial on Facebook (Facebook.com/BethlehemColonial), follow The Colonial on twitter (@ColonialNH), visit the Colonial on line or tune in to North Country Community Radio, WZNC, broadcasting from atop the historic Colonial Theatre at 99.9 on the FM dial.

This evening of great American roots music is made possible with additional support from New Hampshire Public Radio, The Cold Mountain Café, The Wayside Inn, The New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, The Jane B. Cook 1992 Charitable Trust, and The Colonial’s promotional partner, Catamount Arts.

Colonial’s Festival Fridays Features Animation Show of Shows

The newly renovated Colonial Theatre in Bethlehem, NH, continues the Festival Fridays Film Series with the The 19th Annual Animation Show of Shows Friday, August 31. The Animation Show of Shows this year presents 16 exceptional and inspiring animated shorts from around the world. At a time of increasing social instability and global anxiety about a range of issues, the works in this year’s show have a special resonance, presenting compelling ideas about our place in society and how we fit into the world.

These films include Niki Lindroth von Bahr’s Annecy Grand Prix-winning “The Burden”, a melancholy, funny and moving film that explores the tribulations, hopes and dreams of a group of night-shift employees, uniquely capturing the zeitgeist of our time. At the other end of the spectrum, David O’Reilly’s playful and profound “Everything,” based on the work of the late philosopher Alan Watts, explores the interconnectedness of the universe and the multiplicity of perspectives that underlie reality.

Upcoming festivals at The Colonial include the popular Manhattan Short Film Festival October 5th and 6th.

General Admission tickets for the 7:30 showtimes are $10, $8 for Colonial members. All tickets are sold at the door. Concessions include beer and wine, organic popcorn, fine chocolates coffee and tea.

First-place Fishers Sunk By Sea Dogs Despite Sanchez Rehab Start

Former 'Cat and current Blue Jay Aaron Sanchez goes 4.2 IP in 4-3 New Hampshire loss

PORTLAND, ME - Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez made a rehab start for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and Bo Bichette notched three hits Monday night at Hadlock Field, but the 'Cats fell to the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) 4-3 in the first of four games between the two clubs over the next four days. Despite the loss, the Fisher Cats maintained their 2.5 game lead over Trenton (Yankees) in the Eastern Division thanks to a Thunder loss.

Sanchez - who played for the 'Cats in 2014 - is rehabbing a right index finger contusion that has sidelined him since the end of June.

A passed ball allowed the first run of the game to score for Portland in the second and they added three to their lead in the fourth. In that inning, Sanchez allowed three runs on three hits with two walks as the ea Dogs went up 4-0.

New Hampshire went on to score single runs in three separate innings but came up just short. Bo Bichette singled home the first 'Cats run of the game in the fifth, Santiago Espinal doubled home a score in the sixth and Bichette added another RBI single in the ninth to pull the Fisher Cats within one, but the tying run was stranded at first as New Hampshire fell 4-3.

Bichette's three hits and two RBI led the way, while Jon Berti added two hits, two stolen bases and a run scored to his season line.

Tonight's scheduled starter Hector Perez limited the Sea Dogs to one hit, walked one and struck out three in three innings after Sanchez was finished.

The series continues Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. RHP T.J. Zeuch (8-4, 3.34 ERA) will go for New Hampshire while Portland sends LHP Daniel McGrath (2-3, 3.59 ERA) to the hill. Coverage begins with the Fisher Cats Pregame Show at 5:45 p.m. and continues with first pitch at 6:00 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.

New Hampshire returns to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Wednesday, August 22 to play a twi-night doubleheader with the Portland Sea Dogs at 5:35 p.m. The Fisher Cats are closing in on a milestone five million in total attendance. The lucky fan will be rewarded with a spectacular prize package. It will also be Comic Con night and we're giving away FREE t-shirts to the first 1,000 fans presented by Consolidated Communications. Struthers’ Slam Helps Keene State Knock Off Springfield, 14-10

Recap, photo courtesy of Keene State
KEENE, N.H. – Mac Struthers' grand slam highlighted an eight-run first inning as the Keene State College baseball team's bats came to life in a 14-10 non-conference victory over Springfield College on Thursday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex.
Records
  • Keene State:  11-9
  • Springfield:  17-7-2
How It Happened
Seven different Owls recorded a hit in the 14-run offensive attack.  Struthers wound up finishing the day 2-for-4 with four runs batted in, two runs scored and a walk.  Abe Grainger went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a walk.  Nate Rossi also drove in two runs and walked, while Devin Springfield reached four times on two hits and two walks.  John Tarascio singled, walked and scored three runs.  Chad Shade and Logan Barrett each had three hits and two runs batted in for Springfield.
The Pride struck for a run in the first, but Keene State had a big answer in the bottom half of that inning against Springfield starter Nick Naples (2-2).  The Owls loaded the bases with nobody out as Springfield doubled, Rossi walked and Connor Longley singled.  An error on a bouncer to third and a hit by pitch gave KSC a 2-1 lead.  The rally continued with Grainger lining a single to left and David Sevigny working a bases-loaded walk for a 4-1 advantage.  Struthers followed with the biggest swing of the inning, a grand slam to left that put Keene State up 8-1 and knocked Naples out of the game without recording an out.  The Owls could not plate any more in the inning, but Springfield wound up doubling twice in the frame and KSC sent 12 people to the plate overall.
The Pride chipped away at the deficit from there, getting a two-run homer from Alex Denoyelle in the very next inning that made it 8-3.  They drew even closer in the third when Shade singled, stole second and was driven home on Logan Barrett's double.
Leading 8-4, Keene State was back at it in the fourth to extend their lead.  The Owls had the bases full with one out on a walk, hit by pitch and a single from Struthers.  Tom Meucci drew a walk to force in a run and, after Springfield flied to left, Rossi lined a two-out, two-run single that put KSC up 11-4.
Springfield responded with a three-spot of their own in the next half inning as Shade homered and Kyle Allen scored two with a two-out single that chopped the Owls' lead to 11-7.  Grainger remained hot, though, as his single to right center plated Walsh for a 12-7 advantage after five.  The Pride continued to hang around, however, as a two-out rally in the sixth resulted in an RBI single from Barrett and a run-scoring wild pitch that made it a three-run game.  Springfield kept KSC off the board in the bottom half of the inning and loaded the bases with one down in the seventh on three singles.  But KSC reliever Tyler Fitzgerald got David Wells to bounce into a fielder's choice and struck out Nick Leduc to end the threat and keep the Owls out in front 12-10.
Keene State regained some breathing room by plating two in the bottom of that same inning.  Longley walked to start the frame and, with one out, Tarascio was hit by a pitch and Grainger reached on an infield hit to load the bases.  After Sevigny popped out, Struthers rolled a grounder to short that appeared to end the inning, but the throw was airmailed and two runs scored, giving KSC a 14-10 lead.
Fitzgerald calmed things down with a clean eighth that included two strikeouts and Sevigny came into pitch in the ninth and closed things out with a 1-2-3 frame.  KSC starter Steven Zadravec (1-1) earned the win, going five innings with six strikeouts.  Bobby Baril, Fitzgerald and Sevigny combined for four innings out of the bullpen.
Around the Horn
  • Keene State matched a season-high in runs, having scored 14 in wins over FDU-Florham and Illinois Tech.  It was also the fifth time they have scored in double-figures and marked the most runs Springfield had allowed in a game this year.
  • The appearance for Christian Bourgea in this game marked his first since March 4 at William Paterson and was the first time in his career he made an appearance in a reserve role.
  • Keene State has won three straight against Springfield.
Up Next
  • Keene State gets back into Little East play as they will host Rhode Island College for a Saturday, April 14 doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.

SNHU Softball Shut Out at Saint Anselm, 9-0

Recap, photo courtesy of SNHU
When and Where: April 11, 2018 – Manchester, N.H. (South Athletic Field)
Score: Saint Anselm College 9, Southern New Hampshire University 0 (5 inn.)
Records: Saint Anselm 24-9-1 (11-3-1 NE10, 7-2 NE10 NE), SNHU 25-8 (8-5 NE10, 3-4 NE10 NE)
Freshman Shay Sauvageau (Griswold, Conn.) doubled in the fourth inning for what wound up being the only hit of the day for the Southern New Hampshire University softball team, as it was blanked by crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College, 9-0, in five innings Wednesday afternoon at South Athletic Field.
Both teams matched zeroes through the first two innings, before Saint Anselm reached senior Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) in the third. Megan Murrell's bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left brought in the game's first run, before Shannon Colson's two-out RBI single up the middle and Jordan O'Connor's two-run double to left made it 4-0 and ended Lavallee's day in the circle. Sophomore Maddy Barone (Halifax, Mass.) came on in relief and picked up a strikeout to end the inning.
After Sauvageau was stranded following her one-out double to the gap in left-center in the top of the fourth, the Hawks took advantage of an error to hang five-unearned runs on Barone in the home half. A bases-loaded fielder's choice grounder to second, which would have  been the third out of the inning had the error not occurred, instead resulted in a run scoring when Kat Stackrow beat the throw to the plate to get the force. Murrell then drew a walk with the bases still full, before Colson's RBI single up the middle and O'Connor's two-run double to left-center made it 9-0.
The Penmen went 1-2-3 for the third time in the fifth to end it.
Sauvageau was 1-for-2, while senior Katie Horiuchi (Livingston, N.J.) walked in her only at bat.
Lavallee (12-3) was charged with four runs on five hits, while striking out one and walking one, in two-and-two-thirds innings. Barone allowed five runs – all unearned – on two hits and a walks, while fanning one. Freshman Ali Atherton (Milford, Mass.) struck out the only batter she faced.
Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire was playing its seventh game in five days.
- The Hawks now lead, 19-13, in the Queen City Cup standings, following a win that all but wraps up Saint Anselm's first victory in the four-year battle for Manchester supremacy.
