UNH Men’s Hockey Outlasts Bentley, 5-4

DURHAM, N.H. -- Matias Cleland (Longmont, Colo.), Dan Correale (Prince George, British Columbia) and Andrew Poturalski (Williamsville, N.Y.) all recorded two points to lead the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team to Saturday night's 5-4 victory against Bentley University at the Whittemore Center.

UNH improves to 4-6-3 overall while Bentley falls to 5-6-1. The Wildcats netted two power-lay goals and recorded a 37-34 shot advantage in a game that had four ties and one lead change.

New Hampshire returns to action Dec. 4 (7:30 p.m.) at the University of Maine. The Wildcats and Black Bears then face off Dec. 5 (7 p.m.) at the Whittemore Center. Tickets are available by calling (603) 862-4000, ext. 5, at the Whittemore Center box office or online at www.unhwildcats.com.

Correale scored two goals, Cleland tallied a goal and an assist and Poturalski finished with two
assists. Maxim Gaudreault (Annapolis, Md.) and Marcus Vela (Burnaby, British Columbia) scored UNH's other goals.

Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.) made double-digit saves in the second (10) and third (12) periods as part of a 30-save effort.

A total of 11 Wildcats recorded a point, including a single assist by Dylan Chanter (Armstrong, British Columbia), Shane Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass.), John Furgele (Glen Mills, Pa.), Tyler Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.), Cameron Marks (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and Ara Nazarian (Boxford, Mass.).

Kyle Schmidt (two goals) and Max French (two assists) led the Falcons' offense. Derek Bacon and Drew Callin netted the other goals and Gabe Antoni made 32 saves, including 12 in both the second and third periods.

Both teams recorded 10 shots and two goals in the first period. Bentley struck first when Bacon, with the assistance of Billy Eiserman and Tyler Deresky, scored at the top of the crease at 5:03.

The Wildcats leveled the score less than four minutes later. Kelleher initiated the scoring sequence with a pass from the right circle across to Chanter on the left wing. Chanter snapped a low diagonal pass back across to Correale at the right post and he shoveled the puck into the open right side at 8:47.

UNH converted its first power play into a goal and 2-1 lead at 10:37 when Poturalski blasted a shot from the left faceoff dot that Correale tipped past Antoni. Cleland was also credited with an assist.

The Falcons netted the game-tying goal less than two minutes later. In a faceoff to Tirone's left, Callin drew the puck back and Jake Ahlgren quickly returned a pass to the slot, where Callin settled the puck and lifted a backhander inside the right post at 11:52

The Wildcats tallied a 13-10 shot advantage in the second period and scored the only goal of the stanza.

New Hampshire netted another power play goal at 8:16 to regain the lead, 3-2. Poturalski, low on the left side, slid a pass to Cleland in the circle and his rising slap shot sailed into the upper-right corner of the net. Furgele was also credited with an assist.

Bentley forged the third tie of the game, 3-3, at 3:53 of the third period. French, from the right circle, snapped a pass to Schmidt at the opposite post and he roofed a shot from close range. Chris Buchanan also tallied an assist.

The 'Cats went back in front, 4-3, just 12 seconds later. Nazarian carried the puck through the left circle behind the goal line before finding Vela in front for the goal, the first of his career.

The Falcons also had a quick response to forge a 4-4 deadlock at 5:17. Skating down the right circle, French centered a pass to the slot and Schmidt wristed a shot into the cage.

UNH took its fourth lead of the game, 5-4, at 8:31 when Eiserman found Gaudreault at the right post. Marks was credited with the secondary assist.

Bentley called time out at 18:50 and pulled Antoni in favor of an extra skater. UNH also called its timeout before play resumed. Immediately off the faceoff, Andrew Gladiuk's shot was blocked and the puck was cleared into the neutral zone with 65 seconds to play. The Falcons recoiled and immediately reentered the offensive zone, but the Wildcats repelled the attack by sending the puck into the neutral zone with 55 on the clock.

Antoni was forced back into the net with a faceoff just outside Bentley's defensive zone with 51 seconds remaining. He returned to the bench with 32 to play, but the 'Cats kept the Falcons at bay and Kelleher sent the puck the length of the ice. The visitors skated the puck back into the zone with three seconds left but ran out of time before recording a shot.
