Miller Rejoins Men’s Basketball as Graduate Student Manager

DURHAM, New Hampshire – Head coach Bill Herrion of the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team announced Friday the hiring of former standout Matt Miller '15 as the team's graduate student manager.

Miller returns to UNH after a stellar senior season on the court. In 2014-15, he was instrumental in one of the program's most successful seasons. Miller averaged 9.9 points per game, which ranked third on the team, while starting in 16 of 29 games played.

The America East All-Conference Third Team member transferred to UNH from Seton Hill University prior to the 2012-13 season although he was unable to play that season due to NCAA transfer regulations. A year later, injuries sidelined him for the entire 2013-14 campaign.

However, Miller was healthy and eligible to play in 2014-15. He led the America East in 3-point field goal percentage with a 48.1 clip from beyond the arc. His most memorable performance with the 'Cats was his highlight-reel shooting effort on Senior Night against the University of Maine (Feb. 28). Miller drained six 3-pointers and scored a season-high 24 points to lift UNH to a 65-56 victory.

His accurate outside shooting played a critical role in propelling UNH's postseason run. New Hampshire defeated the University of Hartford at home in the quarterfinals before traveling to the University at Albany where they fell 60-58. The team was then invited to play at the CollegeInsider.com Tournament against New Jersey Institute of Technology, the team's first national tournament in program history. Overall, New Hampshire put together a 19-win season, tying the 1994-95 campaign for the most victories in program history, including 12 wins at Lundholm Gymnasium to set a new record.

Durham's Winter Carnival & Cook-Off Slated for February 9th

Durham, New Hampshire - The Durham Parks & Recreation Department will hold their annual Winter Carnival & Chili/Mac & Cheese Cook-Off on Saturday, February 9th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at Churchill Rink on Old Piscataqua Road. The event, now going into its 4th year, will feature an Open Skate at Churchill Rink, as well as a Chili and Mac & Cheese Cook-Off that offers attendees a taste of Durham's finest recipes.
“With the Winter Carnival going into its fourth year, it is getting to be a popular event in town,” commented Durham Parks & Recreation Director, Stefanie Frazee. “It's a great opportunity for community members to get out of the house and shake off the winter blues.”

Cook-Off competitors are made up of an eclectic mix of restaurants, businesses, organizations and residents from Durham, Lee and Madbury. In 2012, fourteen recipes were entered. Carnival attendees are encouraged to sample all of the recipes and vote on their favorite. Those who want to get in on the tasting should arrive early as quantities are limited.

“Over the last few years the Cook-Off has become pretty popular,” commented Parks & Recreation Committee member, Mike Mengers. “But there are plenty of other activities to keep everyone entertained.”
Throughout the Winter Carnival Open Skate will be held in Churchill Rink. Skate rentals will be available. Additional recreation activities and games will also take place. All Winter Carnival activities, including chili and mac & cheese tasting are free and open to the public.

University of New Hampshire Makes Library Closing Time Interesting

Durham, New Hampshire - Patrons of the Dimond Library at the University of New Hampshire who find themselves still there at closing time have a friendly reminder when it comes to packing up for the night. Make that a familiar friendly reminder.

The recorded announcements telling students the library is about to close are the voices of head football coach Sean McDonnell, head hockey coach Dick Umile, and chief faculty marshal Nancy Kinner, whose message includes a rendition of her annual commencement serenade, “Happy Trails.” The trio joins President Mark Huddleston who was enlisted last year to make a closing alert.

Tracey Lauder, assistant dean for library administration, came up with the idea of using well-known people on campus to record the announcements while she was watching an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie where he famously announces “Get ouuuut.”

“For some reason I just thought it would be really fun to hear Ahhnold say ‘Can I have your attention please… the library is now closing… you need to get ouuuuut, but can come baaaaack tomorrow,” Lauder says. “Then I decided to look closer to home for interesting voices.”

The first alert is heard at 1:45 a.m., announcing the library will be closing in 15 minutes, and commending students for their hard work. Kinner sings “Happy trails to you, it’s time to head on home. Happy trails to you, to the circulation desk you should roam.”  At 2 a.m., the “now closed” recording airs.

“I just wanted to make studying so late a wee bit more fun for our hard-working students,” Lauder says.

Other “celebrities” are being approached with the hopes of adding to the recording cast.
