MSL Celebrates Black History Month with Oscar Winning Documentary

Manchester, Vermont - Mark Skinner Library commemorates Black History Month by presenting Mighty Times: The Children’s March on Wednesday, February 13. The Academy Award winner, Best Documentary, Short Subjects will begin at 6:30 p.m.

On May 2, 1963, the children of Birmingham, Alabama took to the streets to challenge segregation. This testament to the fact that young people can make a difference is a production of Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The film runs 40 minutes and will be followed by discussion. It is appropriate for Grades 6 through adult. The program is free and open to the public.

JOHNSON STATE COLLEGE OBSERVES BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH SERIES OF EVENTS THROUGHOUT FEBRUARY

Johnson, Vermont - Johnson State College is observing Black History Month in February with several events, including a lecture by a Mississippi journalist whose work led to the recent convictions of several Ku Klux Klan members for murders committed in the 1960s, a documentary film exploring the role of the National Urban League’s Whitney Young in anti-discrimination efforts; a concert by Brooklyn-based string
composers Charly and Margaux; and American Place Theatre’s production of The Secret Life of Bees, based on the best-selling novel set during the civil rights era. All events are free and open to the public.

Events include:

•    Monday, Feb. 4: Jerry Mitchell, an award-winning investigative reporter whose work led to the convictions of four Klansmen responsible for civil rights era murders, will speak at 6 p.m. in 207
Bentley Hall. Mitchell's talk is titled “Tales of Justice and Redemption in Mississippi.” Since 1989, as a reporter for The Clarion Ledger in Jackson, Miss., Mitchell has uncovered documents, tracked down suspects and witnesses, and prompted law-enforcement officials to reopen the “cold cases” of civil rights era violence. He has won more than 30 national awards for his work, including the Ralph McGill Medal for Courage and a MacArthur “genius award.”

•    Thursday, Feb. 7: In collaboration with Vermont Public Television, JSC will screen the documentary film The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights at 4 p.m. in the Stearns Student Center Cinema.
Young, head of the National Urban League during the 1960s and once called “the inside man of the black revolution,” played an integral role in the fight against discrimination. The event is part of PBS’ monthly Community Cinema series.

•    Monday, Feb. 18: Charly and Margaux, Brooklyn-based indie classical composers whose distinct sound draws on everything from baroque to blues, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Stearns Student Center.
Trained in classical music at Boston College and Berklee School of Music, Charly and Margaux have gone on to collaborate with hip-hop artists and rappers, including Kendrick Lamar, Pharoahe Monch, Wyclef
Jean and Casey Veggies.

•    Wednesday, Feb. 20: New York-based American Place Theatre presents a professionally staged, verbatim adaptation of Sue Monk Kidd’s The Secret of Bees at 8 p.m. in Dibden Center for the Arts. The novel and play cover a young girl’s search for the truth about her mother during the civil rights era.

Opening Day 10th Anniversary Celebration Highlights 2013 Promos

Tickets on sale for Opening Day, all April, May games on February 1
Manchester, New Hampshire -  With Opening Day just nine weeks away, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, unveiled a celebratory kick-off to their tenth season in the Queen City. On April 4, 2013, the team will open its tenth year with a flurry of activities and mementos to honor its time in Manchester. Highlighting that first game is the return of the original uniforms worn during the inaugural season in 2004. Fans will also be treated to additional 10th Anniversary recognitions, including a commemorative ticket for the first five thousand fans entering the stadium and a new plaque to honor fans who have been Season Ticket holders since the franchise's inception.

The unveiling of the Opening Day festivities, and the entire 2013 promotional schedule, ushers in the start of individual game ticket sales for Opening Day, and all other games in April and May, beginning Friday, February 1.

Beauty and the Beast: "On Thin Ice" Premieres Tonight January 31st

Fans of The CW series Beauty and the Beast will be able to enjoy an all new episode tonight at 9pm entitled "On Thin Ice". In tonight's all new episode Vincent's Identity is threatened, Vincent (Jay Ryan) is torn between his new feelings for Cat (Kristin Kreuk) and his old memories with Alex (guest star Bridget Regan). J.T. (Austin Basis) learns that Evan (Max Brown) is planning to propose a task force to catch the beast and must figure out how to stop him. Meanwhile, Tess (Nina Lisandrello) investigates the mysterious skydiving death of the wife of a billionaire adventurer, while Cat remains off duty until she recovers from being shot. Also starring Brian White. Mike Rohl directed the episode written by Blair Singer.

This CW series stars Kristin Kreuk as Catherine, Jay Ryan as Vincent, Max Brown as Evan, Nina Lisandrello as Tess, Nicole Gale Anderson as Heather, Austin Basis as J.T., and Brian White as Joe.

2 Feb 1848: Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
On 2 February 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American War. Ratified by the Senate in March, it provided the U.S. boundary be set at the Rio Grande in Texas and the title of New Mexico and Upper California be transferred. In exchange, Mexico received fifteen million dollars in compensation for the territory and the U.S. agreed to assume claims from private citizens of these areas against the Mexican government. On 3 February 1863, during the Civil War, the "double-ender" side wheel steam gunboat Sonoma, commanded by Commander Stevens, captured the blockade running British bark Springbok off the Bahamas. 4 Feb 1779: John Paul Jones took command of Bonhomme Richard
On 4 February 1779, John Paul Jones took command of Bonhomme Richard (formerly Duc de Duras), which was given by King Louis XVI of France. Jones renamed Bonhomme Richard to honor Benjamin Franklin, the American Commissioner at Paris whose famous almanacs had been published in France under the title Les Maximes du Bonhomme Richard. 5 Feb 1971: Apollo 14 mission
On 5 February 1971, Capt Alan B. Shepard, Jr., Apollo 14 Commander, and Cdr Edgar D. Mitchell, Lunar Module Pilot became the 5th and 6th human to walk on the Moon. During the 9 day mission, 94 lbs of lunar material was collected and Shepard became the first person to hit a golf ball on the moon. Recovery was by helicopter from USS New Orleans (LPH-11). 6 Feb 1862: US Navy forces capture Fort Henry
On 6 February 1862, during the Civil War, Naval forces, under Flag Officer A. H. Foote, captured strategic Fort Henry on the Tennessee River. This breached the Confederate line and opened the flood gates for the flow of Union power deep into the South. Vessels included: Union gunboat squadron – USS Essex, USS Carondelet, USS Cincinnati, St. Louis, and wooden gunboats USS Tyler, USS Conestoga, and USS Lexington. The Vampire Diaries: "A View To A Kill" Premieres Tonight January 31st

Tonight fans of The CW series "The Vampire Diaries" will be able to watch an all new episode at 8pm entitled "A View To A Kill". In this latest episode on "The Vampire Diaries", When Rebekah turns down Klaus’ plea to stop Kol and protect Jeremy, Klaus turns to Stefan for help. After an angry confrontation with her father, Mayor Hopkins (guest star Rick Worthy), over his unconventional approach to ending the violence in Mystic Falls, Bonnie has a frightening run-in with Kol, followed by an unexpected visitor. Klaus complicates the already tense feelings between Stefan and Damon by revealing a bit of Stefan’s personal life, then surprises Damon by asking for personal advice. Elena tells Stefan about her dangerous plan for Jeremy, leaving Stefan in a difficult spot. When the high school’s 1980s Decade Dance is cancelled by Mayor Hopkins, Stefan finds a charming way to make it up to a disappointed Rebekah.
