Elm Street Road Closure, Spring Street to Mechanic Street – Saturday 4/27 through Monday 4/29

The Manchester Department of Public Works announces temporary lane closures planned on Elm Street between Spring Street and Mechanic Street, as well as Concord Street from Vine Street to Elm Street. A 600-ton crane will be set up to replace roof-top equipment at 1000 Elm Street. 

Weather permitting, the lane closures are scheduled to take place starting Saturday, April 27th at 6:00 am. Concord Street will remain open in the evenings and other times when crane activity has concluded. Signs and traffic control devices will be used to alert and assist motorists during the lane closures.  All lanes will reopen at 6:00 pm on Monday, April 29th.

MANCHESTER, NH — Don’t miss our blockbuster exhibition Mount Washington: The Crown of New England, open now through January 16, 2017. It is the first Museum exhibition devoted entirely to art featuring the Mount Washington region. The exhibition features major paintings by Hudson River School artists, including Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Cole, Jasper Francis Cropsey, John Frederick Kensett and David Johnson, as well as acclaimed painters such as Winslow Homer and George Inness. Paintings, prints, vintage photographs and illustrated guidebooks from the late 1820s through the 1870s document the artistic and historical context in which New Hampshire’s most iconic scenic landmark became a national and international symbol of the American landscape, a center for scientific study and one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.

Veteran Diplomat Looks at Geopolitics 100 Years after WWI in 1st Wednesdays Lecture

Manchester, Vermont - Distinguished veteran diplomat George Jaeger will consider the similarities between the run-up to the first World War and current geopolitics in a talk at First Congregational Church in Manchester on October 1 at 7:00 pm. His talk, "A Century after World War I: Are We Sleepwalking Again?” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public. The talk is hosted by Mark Skinner Library.

It’s been said that in 1914 Europe sleepwalked into a war no one wanted. Jaeger will examine the conditions leading to World War I and consider whether current geopolitics might play out similarly.

Jaeger's career spanned the Cold War and beyond. After early assignments in Liberia and Tito's Yugoslavia he served in the US Mission in Berlin, negotiated the non-proliferation treaty in Bonn and covered east-west relations in Paris. Among his most challenging assignments were his three years as Staff Director of the President's Advisory Commission on Arms Control and Disarmament, his stint as a senior negotiator of the Helsinki Final Act in Geneva, and his final tour as Deputy Assistant Secretary General of NATO and Chairman of the Alliance's Political Committee under Lord Carrington in Brussels.

Homers Help Earn Doubleheader Split

Manchester, New Hampshire - The Fisher Cats hit three home runs on Thursday night, helping them earn a split of a doubleheader with the Trenton Thunder. New Hampshire won the opener, 4-3, before coming up a just short in the nightcap, 2-1. The defeat in the second game game allowed the Thunder to take the series, 3-1, but New Hampshire still finished the seven-game homestand with a winning 4-3 record.

In the opener, New Hampshire was down 2-0 after newcomer Matt Boyd allowed a pair of runs in the first inning of his Double-A debut. But Andy Burns cut the deficit in half in the third with his second home run of the season to right field.

An inning later, Brad Glenn started a three-run frame with his team-leading fifth home run, another opposite field shot to right-center field. New Hampshire ended up loading the bases, which set up A.J. Jimenez for a two-run single to center field to put the Fisher Cats on top, 4-3.

Kevin Nolan Homers, Knocks In Two

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - Kevin Nolan went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI and Casey Lawrence worked 6.2 innings for his second win as the Fisher Cats topped Reading 4-2 to complete a series sweep before 6,118 on Sunday afternoon.

New Hampshire (11-10) won its fifth straight, and the win was the tenth consecutive for the Fisher Cats over the Fightin Phils at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium dating back to last April.

Reading (11-9) scored in the top of the first inning.  Brock Stassi doubled , advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Cameron Perkins to put the Fightin Phils up 1-0.

The Fisher Cats moved in front in the bottom of the third inning.  Jonathan Jones walked and Jon Berti was hit-by-pitch to start the inning.  Nolan doubled Jones home to tie the game.  Berti scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike McDade and Michael Crouse delivered Nolan for a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Aaron Altherr singled and scored on a double by Logan Moore to cut the Fisher Cats lead to 3-2.

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - Mike McDade's return to the Fisher Cats was a triumphant one on Saturday evening. The slugger, who signed with Toronto during spring training, belted a first-pitch, first-inning home run to spark the Fisher Cats (10-10) to a 5-0 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils (11-8). The win is the Fisher Cats fourth straight and improved the team to the .500-level for the first time since the opening week of the season.

McDade's home run was the highlight of a three-run first inning against Reading starter Holby Milner. Leading 1-0 after a single and an error, McDade ripped the first pitch he saw into the Dinner in the Den in left field to give New Hampshire a 3-0 lead. The home run was McDade's 32nd in a Fisher Cats uniform following the 16 he hit in 2011 and the 15 he whacked in 2012.

New Hampshire added runs in the fourth and sixth, both off the bat of the red hot Jonathan Jones. Jones plated the first with a squeeze bunt before a traditional single in the sixth gave the Fisher Cats a seemingly insurmountable lead. Jones, who has been the starting center fielder since the Blue Jays designated Kenny Wilson for assignment, has hit safely in five straight while picking up five RBI during that stretch.

Scott Copeland (W; 1-3) was the benefactor of the early run support as he turned in his best outing to date to earn his first Double-A victory. The righty went seven shutout innings, giving up just four hits while striking out five for the second straight outing. He turned it over to Randy Boone and Tony Davis, who each worked a scoreless inning to preserve New Hampshire's first shutout since opening day.

Berti Blasts Fisher Cats to Walk-Off Win

Infielder homers in 12th to take series-opener with Reading

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - Jon Berti picked a good time to hit his first Double-A home run. In the bottom of the 12th inning, the Fisher Cats' second baseman snuck one inside the foul pole in left to send New Hampshire (9-10) home with an 11-10 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils (11-7). The win is the team's third in a row and moves them within one game of .500 entering the middle game with Reading tonight.

A back and forth affair began with the Phils striking for the first three runs of the game against starting pitcher Shawn Hill, who was making his season debut. An Aaron Altherr home run put the Phils on the board in the second, and then they added two more in the third for a 3-0 lead.

The Fisher Cats took advantage of some sloppy fielding to put up a five-spot in the fourth inning. Ryan Schimpf started the scoring with an RBI double. After a pair of errors produced two more runs, Gabe Jacobo laced a two-run single to cap the inning for a 5-3 New Hampshire advantage.

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - The Fisher Cats and the New Britain Rock Cats were rained out on Monday night in their effort to play the second game of their three-game series.  It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Friday, June 27 at 6:05 p.m.

Tickets for the rained-out contest may be exchanged at the Fisher Cats ticket office for any future Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday game during the 2014 season, based upon availability.  On June 27, tickets for the regularly scheduled game will be good for both games of the doubleheader.

Nolan Ignites Fisher Cats Bats in 9-4 Win

15-hit eruption ends six-game losing streak
Manchester, New Hampshire - Nashua's Kevin Nolan blasted a first-inning home run to wake the Fisher Cats out of the offensive doldrums on Saturday afternoon. The three-run shot was part of a four-hit day, and helped the Fisher Cats (3-6) break a six-game losing streak with an 8-4 home win over the Binghamton Mets (6-3) at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

Nolan and the offense hadn't done much entering the third game of the series, mustering one run on nine hits over the first two games. That changed in the first inning as Ryan Schimpf and Brad Glenn singled with two outs. Nolan followed by depositing his first home run into the Dinner in the Den to get the Fisher Cats rolling with a 3-0 lead.

A sacrifice fly in the second pushed the lead to 4-0 before they went on the two-out attack again in the third. Nolan started the third-inning rally with a single, which was followed by an RBI triple from Michael Crouse. Peter Mooney then singled home Crouse to build a 6-0 advantage.

GABE JACOBO NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK

First baseman earns first Eastern League weekly award and second overall

Manchester, New Hampshire - In conjunction with the Eastern League, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats announce that first baseman Gabe Jacobo has been named the league's Player of the Week for the week ending August 18. It is his first career weekly award with the Fisher Cats.  He also won the same award in the Florida State League with Dunedin in May, 2012.

Jacobo earned the award while playing in only four games, but still managed 10 hits in 19 at bats for a .526 average. Half of his hits went for extra-bases, with 2 doubles and 3 home runs, and included a two home run, 5 RBI game in game two of the team's doubleheader in New Britain last Tuesday. He also produced 8 RBI and scored 6 runs for the week.

Jacobo is currently on an 8-game hitting streak, which started with a 5-game stretch with multiple hits, and has a season average of .368, up 64 points since the streak began. Jacobo is the fourth Fisher Cat to win a weekly award this season and second offensive player after outfielder Brad Glenn garnered the same award on June 30. Marcus Walden and Ryan Tepera earned Pitcher of the Week honors on May 19 and July 22, respectively. Jacobo was selected by the Blue Jays in the minor league phase of the 2011 Rule 5 draft after being selected by the Angels in the 10th round of the 2008 draft out of Cal-State Sacramento.

The Fisher Cats return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium for the final four home games of the regular season on Monday, August 26 when they host the Future Red Sox, the Portland Sea Dogs. Meet the Lincoln Women at Mark Skinner Library

Manchester, Vermont - In celebration of Women's History Month, Mark Skinner Library is hosting "The Lincoln Women", a discussion by author C. J. King on Wednesday, March 20 at 7 p.m.

C.J. King first became interested in the Lincoln women when she learned she is related to them through the Harlan family. After visiting Hildene, the Lincoln family home in Manchester, she moved to Vermont and began this research. A resident of Jamaica, Vt., and a native Hoosier, she holds a B.A. in journalism from Ball State University and an M.F.A. in writing from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. During more than 25 years as a professional writer, she has published many articles in newspapers and magazines, including the Manchester Journal, Stratton Magazine and Vermont Magazine. "Four Marys and a Jessie: The Story of the Lincoln Women", published by Hildene in 2005, is her first book.

Monarchs Sign Yellow Horn

Manchester adds left wing from Ontario
Manchester, New Hampshire - The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, have signed left wing Colton Yellow Horn to a professional tryout agreement, Monarchs Director of Hockey Operations Hubie McDonough announced Thursday.

Yellow Horn, 25, has registered 36 goals and 22 assists for 58 points and 28 penalty minutes for the ECHL’s Ontario Reign. The Brocket, Alberta native’s 58 points currently lead all ECHL skaters.  The 5-foot-9, 190 pound left wing recorded his first professional hat trick against the ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears on November 28, 2012.  In parts of three seasons in the ECHL, Yellow Horn has registered 43 goals, 36 assists and 79 points in 87 games between the Elmira Jackals, Stockton Thunder and Reign.  Yellow Horn played three seasons with the Canadian Hockey League’s Allen Americans, registering 67 goals and 111 assists for 178 points and 130 penalty minutes.  Yellow Horn turned pro at the start of the 2008-09 season in Austria with EC Red Bull Salzburg and had three points (1-2=3) in 11 games.  Yellow Horn will don No. 17.

Monarchs Pink In The Rink Moved To Tuesday

Manchester’s game rescheduled to Tuesday, February 12 at 7:00 p.m.
Manchester, New Hampshire - The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, have moved their third annual Pink In The Rink from Saturday, February 9 to Tuesday, February 12 at 7:00 p.m. against the Providence Bruins at the Verizon Wireless Arena, Monarchs President Darren Abbott announced today.

“In the interest of safety for our fans, players, building personnel, staff, city safety personnel and the Providence Bruins, we have decided to reschedule now to give all involved enough time to plan accordingly,” said Abbott.  “Although we have moved this event to Tuesday night, Pink In The Rink will still take place and we know our community will still rally around a great cause.”

The Monarchs Kid’s Club Party has been postponed as a result of the game rescheduling.  A future date has not yet been determined.

MSL Celebrates Black History Month with Oscar Winning Documentary

Manchester, Vermont - Mark Skinner Library commemorates Black History Month by presenting Mighty Times: The Children’s March on Wednesday, February 13. The Academy Award winner, Best Documentary, Short Subjects will begin at 6:30 p.m.

On May 2, 1963, the children of Birmingham, Alabama took to the streets to challenge segregation. This testament to the fact that young people can make a difference is a production of Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The film runs 40 minutes and will be followed by discussion. It is appropriate for Grades 6 through adult. The program is free and open to the public.

Opening Day 10th Anniversary Celebration Highlights 2013 Promos

Manchester, New Hampshire -  With Opening Day just nine weeks away, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, unveiled a celebratory kick-off to their tenth season in the Queen City. On April 4, 2013, the team will open its tenth year with a flurry of activities and mementos to honor its time in Manchester. Highlighting that first game is the return of the original uniforms worn during the inaugural season in 2004. Fans will also be treated to additional 10th Anniversary recognitions, including a commemorative ticket for the first five thousand fans entering the stadium and a new plaque to honor fans who have been Season Ticket holders since the franchise's inception.

The unveiling of the Opening Day festivities, and the entire 2013 promotional schedule, ushers in the start of individual game ticket sales for Opening Day, and all other games in April and May, beginning Friday, February 1.

Manchester drops 7-5 decision to the Springfield

Manchester, New Hampshire - The Manchester Monarchs fell to left wing Jonathan Audy-Marchessault’s hat trick and the Springfield Falcons, 7-5, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Tuesday night.

Manchester (17-17-2-2) is ranked fourth in the Atlantic Division with 38 points.  The Falcons (21-9-3-3) are in first place in the Northeast Division with 48 points.

“We certainly got to learn how to defend better.” said Monarch Head Coach Mark Morris.  “We have to learn how to keep the puck out of the net.  We've had a lot of work in the last week and a half trying to work on our D-core.  There is a lot of disarray right now with so much movement going on in the organization so there is not a whole lot of continuity.  There are certain areas that we have to be a lot more proficient at and that is defending our net.  We made it awfully easy for them to stand around and have second and third pokes at the puck.  When you score five goals, you should be winning hockey games.”

Springfield gained the lead for good at 11:26 of the third period with a power play goal by Audy-Marchessault bringing the score 6-5.  The puck bounced around in a scrum in front of the net before bouncing out to defenseman Nick Holden at the top of the right wing face-off circle.  Holden sent a pass to Audy-Marchessault who one-timed the puck for his third goal of the game and 16th goal of the season.
