Vermont’s Unemployment Rate Increases to 2.2 Percent for September

Today (Oct. 18th, 2019), the Vermont Department of Labor released data on the Vermont economy for the time period covering September 2019. According to household data, the seasonally-adjusted statewide unemployment rate for September was 2.2 percent. This reflects an increase of one-tenth of one-percentage point from the revised August rate. If this preliminary data holds, it would be the first increase to the unemployment rate since April 2009. As of last month’s data, Vermont had the lowest seasonally-adjusted statewide unemployment rate in the country.

“While this month’s report shows a slight increase in the unemployment rate, it is important to note that the data provided is preliminary and likely to be adjusted over time as more detailed information becomes available. Even with this increase, Vermont’s rate remains one of the lowest in the country, making it hard for businesses to fill vacant positions with skilled talent. In continuing our efforts to bolster Vermont’s workforce, the Department is excited to announce that October 2019 has been proclaimed ‘Careers in Construction Month’. In Vermont, construction accounts for more than 5% of the workforce with roughly 15,000 jobs, and an average wage of $51,000 per year, which is above the statewide average. This is a great opportunity to encourage young people to explore the diverse employment options within this important industry, as well as the wide variety of training programs offered through the Department of Labor. Volleyball Lauded by AVCA for Efforts in the Classroom

The Middlebury volleyball team continued its run of excellence in the classroom by earning the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The Panthers posted a team grade point average of 3.46 during 2018-19, marking the 14th-consecutive year (2006-19) that the program has been recognized for its academic achievements. In total, a record-high 1,125 collegiate and high school teams were honored for their hard work in the award's 27th year of existence.

The award, which was initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Seven Panthers in their respective second years or higher earned NESCAC All-Academic honors last fall. The honor is awarded to student-athletes who have completed at least one full year of college study and who carry a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50.

On the court, Middlebury opens the 2019 campaign with two matches on September 7 at the Union Tri-Match against Manhattanville and the host Dutchwomen.

NVU-Lyndon releases 2019-20 Women's Basketball Schedule

Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon has released its 2019-2020 women's basketball schedule. The Hornets' 25 game schedule will include 14 home contests in Stannard Gymnasium.

The Hornets will open the season by hosting the second annual Northern Vermont University Tip-Off Classic on November 8th and 9th. Lyndon will face Fisher College and Rivier University in the tournament.  Game times are to be determined.

Pine Manor College will come to Stannard on November 13th to complete the three-game season

Emily Dewdney Appointed Field Hockey and Lacrosse Head Coach

NEW LONDON, N.H. – July 26, 2019 – Colby-Sawyer Athletic Director George Martin has announced the hiring of Emily Dewdney as the new Head Coach of the Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse programs.

"I am thrilled for the opportunity to continue working with these student-athletes in my new capacity as head coach," said Dewdney. "Emily Rinde-Thorsen did a tremendous job getting the programs to where they are today. I look forward to building on past successes and to continue to emphasize a culture of hard work, confidence, teamwork, and personal growth."

Dewdney is no stranger to each program as she has been an assistant with the field hockey team since it was elevated to varsity status in 2011. She also has spent eight seasons as an assistant for the lacrosse team and was the head coach during the 2018 season as Rinde-Thorsen took a one-season sabbatical.

During the 2018 lacrosse season as the team's head coach, Dewdney was named North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Coach of the Year. She led the Chargers to a 10-6 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the conference to earn the second seed in the postseason tournament. The Chargers reached the championship game for the third time in program history. Dewdney coached the NAC Player of the Year (Nicole Lavigne), the NAC Rookie of the Year (Briana Couture) and the NAC Defensive Player of the Year (Kailyn Lapham).

"I am excited that Emily Dewdney has accepted our offer to lead the field hockey and lacrosse programs at Colby-Sawyer College," said Martin. "Having been a member of our staff for many years, and even serving as the lacrosse head coach in the past, we are fortunate to have someone as talented as Emily take over the leadership of the programs. Her enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge of both sports are evident when you watch Emily work with student-athletes. She is the perfect fit to continue the great momentum both programs have produced over the last several years."

Learn about the geology of New Hampshire while immersed in the wild beauty of Squam Lake and adjacent mountain ranges in this memorable lake experience. Gain a greater appreciation and deeper understanding of Squam Lake from the glacial origin of the mountains to the fascinating histories of different islands. Observe Loons and Bald Eagles in their natural habitats, including nesting sites, along with other wildlife.  Learn how these animals survive and adapt to their aquatic world from your front row seats on the lake. Interactive discussion and questions are always encouraged. Cruises with a Naturalist run on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 3:30 p.m. through the end of August, and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 3:00 p.m. from Labor Day through Columbus Day. All Squam Lake Cruises are 90 minutes in length. Squam Lake Cruises are on canopied pontoon boats. Binoculars are available for wildlife viewing at no additional cost.
