Amphibian Crossing - Detour Tonight 4/26/19

Every year, on the first warm, rainy nights of spring, thousands of salamanders and frogs make their way to vernal pools and other wetlands to breed. Many are killed when their journeys take them across busy roads. In order to protect these migrating amphibians, and to provide a safe place for families to witness the spectacle of the spring amphibian migration, the City of Keene will be closing a portion of North Lincoln Street to vehicle traffic tonight, Friday, April 26, 2019, from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.  This decision is based in part on more than ten years of amphibian migration data collected at North Lincoln Street by citizen science volunteers working with the Harris Center for Conservation Education’s “Salamander Crossing Brigade” program. If you are planning on stopping by to watch the migration keep in mind that migration will only occur after dark, and in wet weather. Don't forget to wear your rain coat and bring a flashlight with you (one per person) if you want to see the migration!

Smith Sisters Sink Salem State

KEENE, New Hampshire -- Sami Smith netted a hat-trick and sister Casi Smith scored her first career goal as the Keene State College field hockey team picked up a 5-2 win over Salem State University on a rainy Tuesday night at Owl Athletic Complex.

KSC maintains its unbeaten record in the Little East Conference at 4-0, with a 6-4 overall mark.  The Vikings fall to 2-7, and 0-4 in LEC competition.

The Owls, who outshot Salem State 28-5, took the lead in the 12th minute on a nifty give-and-go between Kayla Renaud and Sami Smith before Smith finished past SSU goalie Carolyn Woodin.  Three minutes later, the lead was doubled as Haylie Dolan set up Sami Smith for her second of the game.

Renaud got her second assist of the game when setting up Erica Stauffer to make it 3-0 in the 21st minute, and Casi Smith deflected in Stauffer's shot with three minutes left before halftime for a 4-0 lead.

The Vikings pulled back into the game in the second half, as Natalie Bourne scored two minutes after the interval and Courtney Smith slid in to score her second of the year in the 42nd minute to cut the deficit in half.

KSC made sure of the win and Sami Smith made sure of her hat-trick with a goal with three minutes to go.

Meaghan Dwyer and Gwendolyn Thayer each played a half in the cage for KSC and did not make a save.  Woodin made 11 stops for Salem State.

KSC hosts Westfield State in LEC action on Saturday at 3 p.m.  Salem State hosts Framingham State on Saturday at 12 p.m.

M. Jacqueline Eastwood is founder of The Global Child (www.theglobalchild.org), a school for street children in Cambodia where collaboration with MIT is currently underway. Presentation on a New Film about Mount Monadnock

Keene, New Hampshire - The November member meeting of the Historical Society of Cheshire County will offer a presentation on a new film entitled Monadnock: The Mountain that Stands Alone.  Although much has been written about Mount Monadnock, a film about the mountain and its history has never been produced.  The new film will be a feature length documentary with history and personal stories accompanied by imagery and music written and composed in New Hampshire.

Steve Hooper, Terri Sillanpaa, and other members of the Rabbit Ear Films production team will talk about the making of the film and show their recently produced trailer.  Mount Monadnock is the first project of Rabbit Ear Films, a nonprofit film company dedicated to producing compelling stories and stunning visuals.

Road Ecology

Keene, New Hampshire - Back by popular demand (this time in Keene), this indoor lecture-and discussion-based course will provide an introduction to the fascinating new field of road ecology, with special focus on road impacts to fish (yes,fish!) and wildlife.  Last year, folks were calling this the "roadkill" class, and we will talk about roadkill, but road ecology is much more than carcasses.  We'll also discuss road-stream crossings, roadside vegetation, and the effects of roads on water quality and landscape connectivity, as well as emerging solutions to the ecological damage caused by roads.  After taking this class, you'll look at the roads you travel every day in a whole new way!

When:        Tuesdays, October 23 and 30, and November 6 and 13 from 7 to 9 pm at the            
                  Keene State College Science Center (Room 129) in Keene.

Cost:          $40 for Harris Center members/$60 non-members.  Pro-rated rates are $10/session for

All-day Historic Railroad Tour November 3rd

Keene, New Hampshire - The Historical Society of Cheshire County will offer an all-day field trip exploring the Cheshire Branch Line of the historic Boston and Maine Railroad from Keene to points south.  The trip will be led by conductors Brad Blodget and Dick Rogers whose meticulous research has helped preserve much of the history of the B&M Railroad.  Brad Blodget is the author of Mariam Foster’s Boston and Maine Railroad, a collection of photographs and insights into the way the railroad looked and operated in the mid-1900’s.

The daylong exploration of the region’s railroad history will be $18 ($14 for members of the Historical Society of Cheshire County) and it will leave at 9:00 am on November 3rd from the Historical Society at 246 Main Street in Keene.  The railroad tour will stop at former depots of the route along the way south to the State Line Station including the newly restored Troy Depot.  Participants should bring a brown bag lunch.
