BENNINGTON, Vermont – Jonathan Nordh pumped in three
goals as the Southern Vermont men's soccer team secured its first
victory of the season with a 7-0 win over Green Mountain College in
non-conference soccer action on Thursday afternoon at Everett Field.
After nearing the midway point of the first half with few scoring
opportunities, Southern Vermont (1-8-0) opened the scoring in the 23
rd minute when Nordh put home a cross by Matthew Hatch from the left side.
The Mountaineers had a few opportunities following their first goal,
but were unable to find the mark to extend the lead at that point. The
hosts kept pressuring though and were rewarded with another goal at the
35:03 mark when Nordh scored his second of the game, again on a cross,
this time from Matthew Snow. Nordh struck the cross low and left for the
goal.
Green Mountain (0-9-0) had a good opportunity to narrow the score as the half neared an end when
Nazar Zhukovskyy (Stamford, Conn.) drove a shot towards the upper corner of the net, but SVC keeper Noah Chani deflected the ball away.
Southern Vermont countered with an attack of their own and when GMC keeper
Samuel Nichols
(Brunswick, Maine) came out to challenge on a 50/50 ball, he fouled the
SVC player which resulted in a penalty kick. Nordh made no mistake on
the ensuing penalty kick for his third goal of the game in the dying
minutes of the opening stanza.
SVC wasted no time in the second half, scoring again in the 48
th minute when Hatch took a pass from Nikolas Joseph and curled in a shot from about 25 yards out.
GMC's
Ryan Crozier was awarded a free kick ten minutes into the second half, but his attempt to curl the ball around the wall was saved by Chani.
Anthony Dominguez added a pair of goals, while Joseph added another later in the second half.
Chani picked up his first win of the season for SVC by making five
saves, while Nichols picked up the loss after making four stops.
Green Mountain will play at Castleton on Saturday at 1 p.m. in
North Atlantic Conference
action, while Southern Vermont will also be in action on Saturday as it
travels to Mitchell for a New England Collegiate Conference match at 1
p.m.
