Eagles Doubled Up by Cobleskill

POULTNEY, Vt. – Emile Vwaza notched a pair of goals as SUNY Cobleskill earned a 4-2 non-league victory over Green Mountain College on Tuesday afternoon at Eagles Game Field.

Cobleskill (5-5-2) broke the game open in the 4th minute as Khadim Diba linked up with David Vosatka for the game's first goal with a pass across the goal mouth from the right side.

Vwaza extended the lead to 2-0 in the 7th minute when he lasered a direct kick home with a shot from the right side just outside of the 18-yard box which beat the GMC keeper to the near post.

Diba struck for a goal of his own to pad the visitor's lead to 3-0 when he collected a ball misplayed by the Eagles' defense and deposited a shot in the back of the net.

Green Mountain (0-9-0) got on the scoreboard late in the first half when Cameron Book (Poultney, Vt.) took a ball deflected off a defender and hit a shot that beat the Cobleskill keeper high, just under the crossbar to send the teams into the half.

The Eagles cut the deficit to one to 3-2 in the 55th minute when Ryan Crozier (Olmsted Township, Ohio) lunged into a shot that ricocheted off a player into the path of a charging Griffin Shelor (Cedar Park, Texas) who dove to push it past the endline before the goalie got there.

Vwaza gave the Fighting Tigers some breathing room converting a penalty kick awarded after a handball was called in the box on an Eagles player which rounded out the scoring at 4-2.

Picking up the win in net for the visitors was Dan Burger who made two stops. Green Mountain was back stopped by Sawyer Levy (Bethel, Vt.) who turned aside five shots in defeat.

The Eagles will host a pair of Maine teams this weekend as Thomas and UMaine-Farmington visit for a two conference tilts.

UNH Men’s Soccer Announces 2016 Spring Slate

Men's Soccer Soars to 14-0 Win over Green Mountain

NEW LONDON, N.H.  – The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team soared to a 14-0 victory over Green Mountain College in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) match on Saturday afternoon.

The Chargers improve to 9-5 overall with their sixth straight victory and go to 7-0 in the conference. The team will travel to Castleton on Tuesday for a pivotal NAC contest under the lights at 6:30 p.m. Green Mountain drops to 1-13 overall and 0-6 in the NAC. The Eagles will conclude the regular season with three straight home matches beginning on Tuesday against Lyndon at 3:30 p.m.

The reigning NSCAA Division III National Player of the Week, sophomore Denali Sexton (Barrington, R.I.), tied the Colby-Sawyer single game record for goals with four, for the second time this season. He added an assist to set a new single season record for assists with 13. He moved into second place in career assists with 19, third place in career goals with 27 and second in career points with 73 passing current assistant coach Alex Ortega '15.

Sophomore Zach Elmore (Berlin, Vt.) added his second hat trick of the season, while junior Andrew Clothier (Matamata, New Zealand) had seven points on two goals and three assists.

Sophomore Eddie Garcia (Damascus, Md.) finished with a goal and three assists.

Freshman Anthony Romeo (Waterford, N.Y.) notched his first collegiate tally and added an assist.

Freshman James McCleery (Oxford, Mass.), freshman Bryce Schultz (Durham, N.H.), freshman Noah Camelo (Marblehead, Mass.) added a goal apiece.

Freshman Shane Sacks (Huntington Station, N.Y.) made one stop to earn his second clean sheet. Green Mountain goalie Samuel Nichols (Brunswick, Maine) had five saves in the loss.

Eagles Soar to Victory with Four Goal Outburst

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – Green Mountain College men's soccer team scored four unanswered first half goals en route to a 4-2 come-from-behind victory against SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday afternoon at Cobleskill's Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.

Green Mountain (1-12) found itself down 2-0 after just 13 minutes of play after SUNY Cobleskill (0-11) tallied two quick goals off the foot of Todd Briggs after he was sprung free via two through balls played by teammates Andrew Potter and Alex VanFleet.

In the 23^rd minute, Nazar Zhukovskyy (Stamford, Conn.) started the Eagles' on the comeback trail as he converted a penalty kick for his fourth of the season after the hosts were whistled for a foul in the box.

Nate Laymon (Ilion, N.Y.) knotted the game at 2-2 in the 35^th minute as he finished with a strike off of a set piece.

Ryan Crozier (Olmsted Township, Ohio) followed suit on a similar play for his first of the year when he put a free kick behind the hosts' goalkeeper to close out the scoring in the first half.
Both teams tightened up defensively after the break after the five goal onslaught in the opening stanza.

The Eagles did manage to notch an insurance goal in the 66^th minute as Zhukovskyy sent Laymon in with a pass over the top of the defense. Laymon caught the Fighting Tigers' goalie in between and chipped the ball over his head for his second of the game and fifth of the year.

Green Mountain held the slight edge in shots, holding a 18-14 margin and also registered five corner kicks to just one for Cobleskill.

Samuel Nichols (Brunswick, Maine) earned his first collegiate win in net for the Eagles with five saves. Tanner Puff took the loss for the Fighting Tigers despite turning aside seven shots on net.
Green Mountain will head to Colby-Sawyer for its next match on Saturday in a North Atlantic Conference showdown against the Chargers at 3:30 p.m.

Spartans Fall at Middlebury 2-1

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Castleton's men's soccer team fought back from an early, one-goal deficit, but it wasn't enough, as the Middlebury Panthers claimed a 2-1 victory this afternoon in non-conference action.

Tyler Bonini led the Panther attack with two goals, while Solo Felekeni added the lone Spartan score off a feed from Nihad Basic. The Spartans were outshot in the contest 22-7 and stand at 9-5-1 overall after suffering back-to-back losses for the first time this season. Middlebury, meanwhile, improves to 8-2-1 overall with its second straight victory.

The Panthers jumped in front less than two minutes after kickoff when Bonini tallied his first score of the contest. Peter Davis and Daniel O'Grady provided the service on the play, as Bonini finished the ball near the far post to give the hosts an early one-goal lead.

Just over 15 minutes later, the game was back on level terms when Felekeni struck with his sixth score of the season. Basic's cross into the box fell to Felekeni, and the junior striker buried a shot just under the crossbar to even the game at one.

The two squads continued to trade scoring opportunities over the waning minutes of the first half until it seemed that Middlebury had finally broken the deadlock when Greg Conrad's header was on-target, but Amir Pasic made a fantastic, diving save to maintain the 1-1 affair heading into the break.

The Panthers came out of halftime pressing the Castleton defense, and after the hosts failed to capitalize on a pair of quality scoring chances, Bonini came through with the eventual game-winner at the 66:50 mark. Adam Glaser delivered a cross into the box from the near flank that Conrad flicked towards the far post. Bonini was there to head home Conrad's pass to secure a 2-1 victory for Middlebury.

In net, Pasic proved to be a dependable presence, once again, for the Spartans despite the loss, producing seven saves and stifling a number of other Middlebury scoring opportunities. Jeremy Yeager, meanwhile, picked up his first career win following a three-save performance in his debut.

The Spartans return to the pitch this Saturday as the nightcap of a tripleheader at Spartan Stadium.
 Castleton's football team opens the day by facing Gallaudet at noon followed by the field hockey squad, who faces Husson at 4:30 pm. The men's soccer squad will finish off the day by hosting SUNY Canton in non-conference action at 7 pm.

Keene State Men's Soccer Ends Skid With 3-0 Shutout Of Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.-- The Framingham State University men's soccer team fell 3-0 to Keene State in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Maple Street Field in Framingham. With the win the Owls improve to 4-7 and the Rams slip to 5-8.

After playing to a scoreless first half the Owls struck in the 62nd minute when sophomore Promise Kpee sent a long strike from left to right past the Rams keeper. Thomas Bartley assisted on the score. Just over ten minutes later the Owls added to their lead when David Villalobos scored with an assist from Jacob Bluegrass.

The Owls reached the final margin in the 83rd minute when Jacob Papanicolaou found the back of the net with help from Cam Rogers.

The Rams best chance to score came with 13 minutes to play in regulation. A Keene State foul set up a free kick just outside the box on the far side of the field. The Rams player's shot was blocked and the rebound was sent just wide of the open side of the net. Josh Arno made nine saves in the setback for the Rams. Mark Keller made five saves in the shutout victory for the Owls.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, October 17th when they travel to Salem State for a MASCAC matchup. The Owls will host UMass.- Dartmouth on the same day.

Middlebury Men's Soccer Earns Comeback Win Over Wesleyan

Greg Conrad scored the game-winner with 10:10 remaining.

Greg Conrad scored the go-ahead goal with a header at 79:50 as Middlebury came back to defeat Wesleyan in a NESCAC game Sunday morning. The loss snapped Wesleyan's six-game unbeaten streak as the Cardinals are now 7-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the NESCAC. The Panthers move to 7-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the league, returning to action Wednesday when they host Castleton at 3:00 p.m.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, with Wesleyan outshooting the Panthers 7-5.

The Cardinals nearly took the lead less than three minutes into the match on a shot from point-blank range by Komar Martinez-Paiz, but Middlebury goalie Greg Sydor made a diving stop to his right.
The best Middlebury scoring chance in the half came with 28:09 when Conrad blasted a shot from the right from 15 yards, but Cardinal goalie Jack Katkavich went to his knees and caught the ball in his midsection.

Wesleyan came out on fire in the second half, registering five shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. One of those, a header by Adam Cowie-Haskell, found the back of the net 7:50 into the half. The goal came off a free kick by Brandon Sousa.

The Panthers tied the match at 68:49 on a goal by Daniel O'Grady. The unassisted tally from 18 yards out beat a diving Katkavich inside the left post.

Middlebury completed the comeback when Conrad scored after a centering pass from Philip Skayne with 10:10 remaining.

Sydor earned the win in net for Middlebury with a career-high 12 saves, while Katkavich finished with five stops for the Cardinals.

Men's Soccer Earns Clean Sheet at Lyndon, 4-0

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. - The Colby-Sawyer College men's soccer team earned a 4-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory at Lyndon on Saturday afternoon at the Varsity Athletic Field.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-5 overall and 5-0 in the NAC. The Chargers will stay in Vermont on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. tilt at Johnson State. The Hornets (1-10, 0-5 NAC) host New England College tomorrow at 2:30pm.

Noah Camelo (Marblehead, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal with a header off a Denali Sexton (Barrington, R.I.) corner in the 25th minute. The helper gives Sexton his 15th career assist ranking him tied for fifth on Colby-Sawyer's all-time list.

Sexton would break into the scoring column in the 48th minute with a header of his own off a free kick from Zach Anderson (Wilmington, Mass.). Sexton picked up his second goal of the day in the 71st minute when he beat the defense after a lead pass from Zach Elmore (Berlin, Vt.). Just over a minute later, Andrew Clothier (Matamata, New Zealand) launched a corner kick into the box that found Kevin Tracy (West Hartford, Conn.) who kicked the ball over the line just before Hornet keeper Matt LaClair (Beekmantown, N.Y.) swatted it away.

LaClair made six saves in 75 minutes of work in net for the Hornets.  Jason Pelkey (Barre, Vt.) picked up one save in relief of LaClair.

Shane Sacks (Huntington Station, N.Y.) recorded four saves in the shutout win for the Chargers to get his second win of the season.

"I always tell my players, the most important thing is 3 points and a clean sheet at the end of day, especially when we play away from home. That was the case this evening. We stayed compact in the back and tightened it up in the midfield to get the result. Once we started playing faster in the second half and being more clinical in our passing in the final third, we started seeing more chances and we looked more like ourselves. It was great seeing Sexton being lethal in the box again as he was getting the ball served to him. On another positive note was the welcoming back Eddie Garcia. Garcia is a huge player for us and very important to the spine of the team. He's been missing for a few weeks now with a serious injury but its great seeing him back on the pitch and getting his fitness back. He knows how important he is to the whole squad as they feed off his energy in the middle. Overall it was a good day for the Colby Sawyer College Men's Soccer team."

Late Rally Gives Men's Soccer a 2-1 Victory over Vermont

HANOVER, N.H. – Trailing by one with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, the Dartmouth men’s soccer team went on to score two goals within 66 minutes to defeat Vermont, 2-1, on Burnham Field Tuesday evening.

Sophomores Matt Danilack and Matt Greer were credited with the goals, with Danilack scoring the game-tying marker and Greer earning his first game-winner of the season. Greer also earned the assist on Danilack’s tally. 

The Big Green improved to 5-3-1, while the Catamounts dipped to 5-5-1.

“I give credit to Vermont,” head coach Chad Riley said. “They are a good team and had some good chances. We were disappointed to give up one goal on a set piece, but what a fantastic response we had to that. It showed a lot of character and leadership and it made me proud to see that we didn’t lose composure. It was a good team effort. A lot of people stepped up and played a very good game. I am very proud.” 

Vermont had its first real attempt at a goal in the 25th minute, when one of its players intercepted a cross near Dartmouth’s goal and took the ball towards junior James Hickok in net on the foot of a speedy Catamount, being stopped only when a Green defender kicked the ball out.

The Catamounts controlled the action in the second half, outshooting the home team, 9-6. With 24 minutes remaining in regulation, Miralles shot from just outside the box and sent the ball past Hickok. Lucky for Dartmouth, junior Ricardo Perez was in the net to prevent the goal.

At 74:11, a yellow card gave the visitors a free kick and was headed out by a Dartmouth defender in the box. The ball was sent directly to Nile Walwyn, who kicked it through a sea of Big Green players into the right of the net to put Vermont up by one with 15 minutes to go. 

With the clock at 87:55, Greer’s corner kick landed right in the center of the box and was headed into the left corner by Danilack, tying the score at one with just two minutes to play. At 89:01, with the ball was deep in Dartmouth territory, it got knocked out and sent to Greer, who was completely open in the field. He evaded one defender, which put him head-to-head with the Greg Walton in net and the sophomore sent the ball into the right of the net past a diving keeper.

The Catamounts outshot the Big Green, 14-11, and had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. Hickok earned his second win of the year and stopped just one shot, while Walton had to make five saves.

Dartmouth will be on the road for two Ivy League matches, heading to Yale for a 4 p.m. game on Oct. 10 before traveling to Philadelphia to take on Penn at 7:30 p.m. the following Saturday, Oct. 17.

Eagles Tripped up by Cross Town Rivals

CASTLETON, Vermont – The Green Mountain College men's soccer team came away on the short side of a 5-0 decision against Castleton University in North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

The win moves the Spartans to 8-2-1 overall, and 4-0 in NAC play. The loss drops Green Mountain to 0-10 on the season, with a conference record of 0-3.

The Spartans got on the board first, with Solo Felekeni taking a pass from Paul Phillips and burying it into the top corner of the goal just over the fingertips of the GMC keeper in the 13th minute.

Felekeni would waste little time finding the back of the net again, collecting a bouncing ball in the box and driving it home to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead at the 10:55 mark.

The Eagles dug in and played better defensively after falling behind early, limiting the Spartans offensively for the remainder of the half despite being unable to get much generated in the way of offense.

With just over 20 minutes remaining in the game, Castleton's Jake Tietgens found the back of the net to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Tietgens took a ball that was deflected by the keeper, collected himself, and fired a shot into the left side of the net.

The hosts would strike again quickly as Blake Hart would find the back of the net on a pass from Nihad Basic to make it 4-0 in favor of the home team. Hart ripped a shot inside the six-yard box that deflected off the keeper's fingertips and found its way into the goal.

Glenn Devine closed out the scoring as he took a cross from the near side from Felekeni and buried it with a header inside the box to make it 5-0 with 17 minutes remaining.

Spartans Blank Green Mountain, 5-0

CASTLETON, Vermont – The Castleton men's soccer team maintained its perfect record in North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 win over Green Mountain College.

The win moves the Spartans to 8-2-1 overall, and 4-0 in NAC play. The loss drops Green Mountain to 0-10 on the season, with a conference record of 0-3.

Mountaineers Spin Shutout against Eagles

BENNINGTON, Vermont – Jonathan Nordh pumped in three goals as the Southern Vermont men's soccer team secured its first victory of the season with a 7-0 win over Green Mountain College in non-conference soccer action on Thursday afternoon at Everett Field.

After nearing the midway point of the first half with few scoring opportunities, Southern Vermont (1-8-0) opened the scoring in the 23^rd minute when Nordh put home a cross by Matthew Hatch from the left side.

The Mountaineers had a few opportunities following their first goal, but were unable to find the mark to extend the lead at that point. The hosts kept pressuring though and were rewarded with another goal at the 35:03 mark when Nordh scored his second of the game, again on a cross, this time from Matthew Snow. Nordh struck the cross low and left for the goal.

Green Mountain (0-9-0) had a good opportunity to narrow the score as the half neared an end when Nazar Zhukovskyy (Stamford, Conn.) drove a shot towards the upper corner of the net, but SVC keeper Noah Chani deflected the ball away.

Southern Vermont countered with an attack of their own and when GMC keeper Samuel Nichols (Brunswick, Maine) came out to challenge on a 50/50 ball, he fouled the SVC player which resulted in a penalty kick. Nordh made no mistake on the ensuing penalty kick for his third goal of the game in the dying minutes of the opening stanza.

SVC wasted no time in the second half, scoring again in the 48^th minute when Hatch took a pass from Nikolas Joseph and curled in a shot from about 25 yards out.

GMC's Ryan Crozier was awarded a free kick ten minutes into the second half, but his attempt to curl the ball around the wall was saved by Chani.

Anthony Dominguez added a pair of goals, while Joseph added another later in the second half.
Chani picked up his first win of the season for SVC by making five saves, while Nichols picked up the loss after making four stops.

Green Mountain will play at Castleton on Saturday at 1 p.m. in North Atlantic Conference action, while Southern Vermont will also be in action on Saturday as it travels to Mitchell for a New England Collegiate Conference match at 1 p.m.
