DOCUMENTARY ON CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER WHITNEY YOUNG TO BE SCREENED AT JOHNSON STATE ON FEBRUARY 7

Johnson State College

Johnson, Vermont - Johnson State College, in collaboration with Vermont Public Television, will host a free screening of the documentary film The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Cinema Room of the college’s Stearns Student Center.

The film tells the story of Whitney Young, once called “the inside man of the black revolution.” Young, head of the National Urban League during the 1960s, played an integral role in the fight against discrimination. He navigated between the worlds of disempowered African-Americans and the powerful white elite, drawing criticism from the black power movement, civil rights leaders and white leaders as he pushed for change.

The event is part of PBS’ monthly Community Cinema series, in which free monthly screenings and community discussions of films from PBS’ Emmy Award-winning series “Independent Lens” are held throughout Vermont and the nation.
