UNH Men’s Soccer Announces 2016 Spring Slate

DURHAM, N.H. – Head coach Marc Hubbard of the University of New Hampshire men's soccer program announced Wednesday the 2016 spring schedule. The slate features four games with two at home.

Castleton Auger and Wells Named Scholars of Distinction

CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton field hockey players Cassidy Auger and Sarah Wells were named 2015 ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III Scholars of Distinction this morning, as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

This is the second time in as many years that Auger has received the award, while Wells received the honor for the first time. Both players were also named to yesterday's National Academic Squad.

To be named a ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Scholar of Distinction, a student-athlete must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2015-16 academic year. To view the complete list of honorees, click here.

St. Lawrence Too Much for Castleton

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Spartans trailed 3-1 in the opening five minutes, and wouldn't get any closer as St. Lawrence pulled way for a 22-3 victory played at Plattsburgh St. on Wednesday afternoon.

The Saints, who are received votes in the latest national poll, outshot Castleton 58-26 and owned a 37-24 edge in ground balls as they improved to 3-0. The Spartans did own a slight edge in faceoffs, winning 15 of 28, but drop to 0-2 on the year.  

Senior Zach Devoid paced the Castleton offense with two goals and two ground balls, while Sam Frackleton scored and picked up a ground ball. Sophomore Joshua Gosselin won 12 of 21 faceoffs and picked up five ground balls.

Conor Healy led all scorers with six points on four goals and two assists while Jeremy Vautour chipped in three goals, one assist and three ground balls. Charlie Duprey also had a hat trick in the contest.

St. Lawrence scored three goals in the first four minutes, before Frackleton's score at 10:57. The Saints responded with five more goals in the period for an 8-1 lead after the first quarter.

The teams each scored twice in the second, leaving the Spartans down 10-3 at the half. However, the final 30 minutes was all St. Lawrence as the Saints shut out Castleton while scoring eight in the third and three in the fourth to secure the win.

St. Lawrence's Ryan Fisher earned the win after playing 30 minutes and made four saves while giving up three goals. Peter Latulippe took the loss for Castleton as he allowed eight goals and made three saves in the first quarter. Romello Lindsey played the final 45 minutes and made 16 saves while giving up 14 goals.

Castleton looks for its first win this Saturday when the team hosts Plymouth St. at 1 pm.

Keene State Women's Lacrosse Routs Colby-Sawyer For First Win

KEENE, N.H.-- Kaitlin Nolan and Jenna Bellano each notched three goals as the Keene State College women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season with a 15-5 triumph over Colby-Sawyer College at Owl Athletic Complex on Tuesday night.

#4 Middlebury Cruises Past Rensselaer

The fourth-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team earned a 17-6 road win at Rensselaer (1-1) on Tuesday afternoon at Renwyck Field. The Panthers (2-0) held a 10-3 lead at the half and never looked back en route to the win. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday with a NESCAC road contest at #10 Tufts.

Chrissy Ritter had three goals and an assist to lead Middlebury, while Mary O'Connell tallied two goals and assisted on two others. Bridget Instrum had two scores and one helper, Laurel Pascal won six draws, while Maggie Caputi caused three turnovers in the win.

Middlebury Pulls Away From Endicott for Road Victory

Sean Carroll posted a career-high five goals during Tuesday's victory.

With the score tied at 3-3 after one quarter, Middlebury outscored host Endicott 5-2 in the second stanza and slowly pulled away in the final two quarters for a 16-10 road win at Hempstead Stadium. The seventh-ranked Panthers (2-0) return to NESCAC action when they host top-ranked Tufts on Saturday, while the Gulls (1-3) travel to Salve Regina on the same day.

Leissner Notches 28 points, 10 boards but Men’s Hoops Fell to Vermont, 63-56, in AE Semis

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds as the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team fell to the University of Vermont, 63-56, in the America East Playoffs semifinals, Monday night at Patrick Gymnasium.

The Wildcats' season ends with an overall record of 19-12, matching the program's single season wins record, and a conference record of 11-5. Vermont moves on to the title game against Stony Brook University next weekend. The Wildcats played in the semifinals in back-to-back seasons.

• Leissner totaled his sixth double-double of the season on 12 of 25 shooting.

Spartans Fall to No. 10 Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. – Castleton kept it close early but 10th ranked Tufts pulled away midway through the first half on the way to a 23-5 victory at Bello Field on Monday evening.

The Jumbos were strong in their season-opener as outshot the Spartans 46-8 and owned a 22-5 edge in draw controls. Castleton, meanwhile, did score on to of their four free position shots but dropped to 1-1 overall.

Castleton McKenna & Els Earn NAC Weekly Honors

CASTLETON, Vt. – After leading the Spartans to a season-opening 15-4 victory against Western Connecticut, senior Meghan Els and freshman Erin McKenna were honored as the North Atlantic Conference Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference today.

Els was dominant in Castleton's win on Saturday. The senior made five saves and gave up three goals in the first half, and allowed an early second half goal before shutting out the Colonials for the final 27 minutes to earn the win. She finished with ten saves overall. Last year Els earned Defensive Player of the Week honors three different times.

McKenna was a key force on defense in the Spartan victory on Saturday. She played the entire game on defense and helped limit the Colonials to their lowest scoring output since 2012 and zero goals over the final 27 minutes of regulation. She also picked up a pair of draw controls in the win.

Castleton is back in action tonight when the team plays No. 11 Tufts a 7 pm.

Ernst Leads Men's Lacrosse to Season-Opening Win

Will Ernst had a huge day between the pipes for the Panthers.

Middlebury goalkeeper Will Ernst made a dozen saves in goal to lead the Panthers to a 5-4 win over Connecticut College in the season-opener for both teams. Sixth-ranked Middlebury has now won 11-straight at home, after a 10-0 mark on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium a year ago. The Panthers return to action on Tuesday at Endicott, while the Camels host Vassar on Wednesday.

After a scoreless first quarter, Conn. took a 1-0 lead with 13:10 remaining in the second when Ross Thompson scored from 12 yards out. Middlebury answered less than three minutes later when Joseph Zelkowitz caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball and raced to the other end of the field before finding the back of the net.

The Panthers went up 2-1 with 7:05 left in the quarter when Kyle Soroka fed Jack Gould for a man-up goal. The Camels evened the game at the 2:35 mark when Pierce DellaFera found Tucker Mscisz for the first of his two goals on the afternoon.

Mscisz' second tally opened the second half, as he quickly turned and fired a low shot in the back of the net at the 13:07 mark to put his team on top, 3-2. Middlebury scored the only other goal of the quarter with 3:32 remaining when Sean Carroll converted on a quick-stick shot after a dish from Gould to knot the game at 3-3.

The Panthers took a 4-3 lead at the 8:24 mark of the fourth quarter when Henry Riehl converted after a pass from Parker Lawlor. The Camels answered less than two minutes later when PJ Kelleher ripped a shot into the back of the net with an assist from Thompson.

Conn. looked to regain the lead with 4:40 remaining with a 1:00 man-up opportunity. Ernst came up big on a shot from Kelleher cutting to the goal before stuffing him again seconds later. Following a Camel timeout, John Cunningham made a nice feed to Mscisz, but his bid for a third goal was denied by another spectacular save by Ernst.

Middlebury cleared the ball and took time off the clock before Conn. regained possession in the final minute. A shot went high with 10 seconds left before the Panthers called a timeout. The Camels had one last chance to tie the game, but Ernst was again equal to the task, thwarting a great shot from Derek Bertolini as time expired.

Riehl led Middlebury with two goals, Gould finished with a goal and an assist, while Lawlor had two helpers. John Jackson won 6-12 face-offs with four ground balls, while seven different Panthers caused turnovers.

Mscisz scored twice for the Camels, with a goal and an assist from Thompson. Ben Parens won 6-12 face-offs and had four ground balls, Bobby Bleistein scooped four off the ground to go along with 12 saves, while Max King caused two turnovers.

Middlebury held a 31-30 edge in shots, while Conn. won the ground ball battle, 23-16. The Panthers cleared 12-16 opportunities, while the Camels went 15-23.

Panthers advance to NESCAC title game with 3-1 win over Trinity

Middlebury scored three unanswered goals as the Panthers advanced to the NESCAC Championship with a 3-1 triumph over Trinity on Saturday in Kenyon Arena. Top-seeded Middlebury (19-4-3) will meet the winner of the second semifinal between #2 Amherst and #3 Connecticut College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The title game will be the 11^th for the Panthers as the Bantams finish their season at 15-9-2. The winner of Sunday's title contest will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

Trinity had a good opportunity to grab an early lead when Shannon Ferrell slipped behind the Panther defense on a breakaway. Farrell whistled a shot over the cross bar just over two minutes into the game.

Sixth-ranked Middlebury earned a power play with 5:42 left in the opening period and moved the puck well, but weren't rewarded for its effort. The Panthers took seven shots with three of them being on goal. Elizabeth Wulf had the best chance with a deflection at the left side of the net that Bantam goalie Sydney Belinskas turned aside.

The Bantams got a late power play and capitalized on a tremendous end-to-end effort by Emma Tani. Tani collected the puck in front of the goal after Belinskas broke up a Middlebury centering pass, weaved her way through the neutral zone, jumped past a defender and finished off the rush with a high shot. That goal came with 12 seconds left in the period and was her ninth of the season.

In the second period, the Panthers pulled even at the 8:57 mark on the first career goal by Jenna Marotta. Marotta drilled a shot from the right point on the power play after Julia Wardwell slid the puck across from the opposite side.

Trinity came close to regaining the lead on a rush up the right wing led by Farrell. Farrell skated in along the boards and set up Kate Fraley for a one-timer from inside the circle. Middlebury goalie Julia Neuburger steered the scoring bid aside keeping the score tied at 1-1.

The hosts struck again while on the power play later in the period, when Maddie Winslow netted her team-leading 16th of the season after trading passes with Wardwell. That goal came at the 16:39 mark of the middle period.

The Panthers protected their one-goal lead throughout the period, but Trinity made a late push. Melissa Maffeo and Hannah Oganeku each had shots from close range stopped by Neuburger on a scramble for a loose puck at the top of the crease with just under five minutes left in regulation.

Trinity called a time out with 53.2 seconds remaining and also brought Belinskas to the bench for an extra attacker. The Panthers controlled the ensuing face off taken just outside the Bantam blue line and kept the guests hemmed in their own zone until Jessica Young added an empty-net goal for Middlebury with 10 seconds remaining.

Neuburger finished with 21 saves, while Belinskas had 19, as each team finished with 22 shots on goal. The Panthers were 2-4 on the power play and Trinity had one goal on two attempts.

Keene State Women's Basketball Sets Wins Record, Reaches ECAC Final With 72-62 Win Over Endicott

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sarah Kober scored a career high 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as the Keene State College women's basketball team advanced to the ECAC New England championship game with a 72-62 win over Endicott College on Saturday at the Alumni Healthful Living Center at Western New England University on Saturday.

• KSC scored the final seven points of the half, taking a 38-32 lead into halftime when Kober beat the buzzer with her first career three pointer.

Second Half Highlights 

• Endicott hung around in the third quarter, taking a 44-43 lead on Catie Lipscomb's three with 4:55 to play.  Hood and D'Annolfo traded baskets before Gabriella Coppola scored with 1:50 left for a 50-49 Endicott lead
• Emily McPadden drained a three with 55 seconds to go as KSC led 52-50 after three.
• Endicott led 56-54 on Sam Charette's basket with 7:36 left, but KSC went on a 12-2 run as Cognetta made threes on two straight possessions and Kober scored on a jumper with 3:57 left for a 66-58 lead.
• Charette's hoop was the last field goal the Gulls would score, and Kober scored inside with 1:12 to go for a 72-62 lead before Lipscomb made two free throws for the final score.

Dartmouth Drops 7-6 Heartbreaker to Wagner at Home

HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth men’s lacrosse opened its five-game home schedule on Saturday with a 7-6 loss to Wagner at Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday afternoon, leading for almost the entire game until the visitors took the lead with just 21 seconds remaining in the contest.

The Big Green fell to 0-4, while the Seahawks defeated Dartmouth for the first time in program history and improved to 2-3. 

Junior Wiley Osborne led the team with four goals and was the only Green player to get into double digits. Four other players ended the day with a point apiece.

It took almost 12 minutes and a combined 15 shots before the first goal of the game was scored. With 3:47 left in the first, Wagner’s Paul DeVita netted an unassisted tally that proved to be the only marker of the quarter. A minute and a half later, Osborne had Dartmouth’s best chance at a goal when his shot hit the crossbar.

The Green outscored the Seahawks, 3-1, in the second, and all three tallies came from Osborne. His first two goals early in the quarter were scored just eight seconds apart; the first was assisted by freshman Austin Meacham and the second was unassisted. With 5:30 remaining, Wagner tied it at two-all, but Osborne gave Dartmouth the go-ahead just 19 seconds later, with the helper going to junior Don Stephan.

With a 3-2 lead at the start of the third, Dartmouth and Wagner traded goals until two in a row by the Seahawks tied the score at five with 57 ticks left on the clock. With just six seconds remaining in the quarter, sophomore Evan Key got his first of the game and his third of the season – an unassisted tally made possible by a long clear by senior goalkeeper Blair Friedensohn – to give the home team a 6-5 edge heading into the fourth.

Defense was the word in the fourth, as neither team allowed much in the way of shots. The first goal of the quarter occurred with 2:36 left, a tally by Billy Martin that tied the score at six-all. With 21 seconds on the clock, Andrew Streilein gave the visitors their first lead since the opening quarter with the only man-up goal of the contest, and that would be an edge that would last until the end of the game. 

Wagner outshot Dartmouth, 37-31, while the Green went 12-for-17 at the X. Friedensohn played all 60 minutes and had eight saves, while the Seahawks’ Matt Sefcik made 12 stops.

The Big Green will take two weeks off and will return to action on Saturday, March 19 with a 1 p.m. game at Michigan.

Belanger Scores 23, Women's Hoops Falls to Maine in AE Quarterfinals

Binghamton, N.Y.  – Senior guard Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) closed out her career with a team-high 23 points, but the UNH women's basketball dropped its America East quarterfinal game with Maine, 58-47, on Saturday at the Events Center at Binghamton University.

The Wildcats closed the season with a 12-18 overall record. Maine improved to 25-7 with its 13^th straight win and advances to the semifinals on Sunday.

Belanger moved up another spot on both UNH's career scoring and rebounding lists. She finishes No. 5 in scoring with 1,453 points and No. 7 in rebounding with 703. She is one of three Wildcats in program history to score more than 1,400 points and grab more than 700 rebounds.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Belanger scored more than 20 points for the third straight game and 12^th time this season.
• Her 23 points gave her 513 points for the season, the eighth best single-season total in school history.
• Sophomore Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) joined Belanger in double figures with 11 points.
• Pogue led the Wildcats in rebounds with six.
• Freshman forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) had six points and four rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UNH stayed with the Black Bears, who went 15-1 in America East during the regular season, throughout the game.

The Wildcats trailed 33-27 at the half. Baskets by Belanger and Storey cut Maine's lead to 39-36 after three periods.

A layup and foul shot by sophomore guard Peyton Booth (Wadsworth, Ohio) again made it a three-point game at 46-43 with 4:43 to play. Sigi Koizar, who led Maine with 23 points, answered with her own basket and foul shot.

UNH pulled to within 51-47 when Belanger banked in a shot in the lane with 1:11 to go. Liz Wood responded with a bucket inside and Maine closed it out with foul shots.

UNH Women’s Track Assistant Coach Hoppler Named Northeast Assistant Coach of the Year

NEW ORLEANS – Assistant coach Robert Hoppler of the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team was named NCAA Division I Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Friday.

In his 17^th year with the program, Hoppler has led the UNH cross country program to a third consecutive America East championship in the fall and most recently coached the track & field team to a runner up finish at the league championships.

"I would like to thank the coaches association for this honor as well as the student-athletes of the University of New Hampshire cross country and track & field program for all the hard work and dedication," said Hoppler. "It is a privilege to coach a great group of athletes. I would also like to thank coach Boulanger for his leadership of the entire program as the director."

So far this year, Hoppler has coached three top-10 finishers at the America East Cross Country Championships as well as five champions at the America East Indoor Track & Field Championships.

On the national level, Hoppler guided senior Laura Rose Donegan (Melbourne, Australia) to a 30^th place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and also coached sophomore Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) to the fastest collegiate mile in the country as she is set to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships next weekend. Just this season, six school records were broken by student-athletes under the guidance of coach Hoppler.

Hoppler earned the same honor last spring after a successful outdoor season.

Clancy Records Career-High 13 Saves; Women's Lax Falls to Fairfield, 16-6

GAME RECAP

• Devon Croke (Norwell, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal at 18:39 of the first half to pull UNH within 3-2, but Fairfield scored four goals in a span of 2 minutes, 45 seconds to build a 7-2 advantage at 14:22; the Wildcats never got closer than four goals the rest of the way.
• The Stags closed the first half on a 3-0 run to take a 10-3 lead into halftime. The visitors built that lead with sizeable advantages in shots (21-8), draw controls (10-4) and turnovers (4-10).
• Laura McHoul (Westwood, Mass.) and Devan Miller (Bristol, R.I.) scored consecutive goals at 22:40 and 22:09 to mark the smallest second-half deficit of six goals, 11-5.
