HANOVER, N.H. – Four players ended up with multi-point performances in Dartmouth’s 22-11 loss to No. 14 Cornell at Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green fell to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in Ivy League play, while the Big Red improved to 6-3 and 2-1.
Ben Martin and George Prince both scored two goals and tacked on a pair of assists for four assists, while Jack Korzelius and Liam O’Connell had their first hat tricks of the season. Matt Paul, David Gallagher and Trevor Ballantyne had one point each and Kiernan Gunn had a career-high seven ground balls.
In net, Alex Burnley had his first start since Feb. 24, ending up with five saves.
“Our response in the second half was tremendous,” head coach Brendan Callahan said. “That speaks to the character of the group. The ‘come out and fight, no quit’ attitude. Offensively, this is a step forward for us. We started to play better together. Our injuries were a bit much for us to overcome, though, especially against a very good offensive team.
“We told our best guys that we needed them to step up, and Jack did his part with his hat trick. Liam had his first career hat trick and how hard he has been working in practice really showed in the game. Alex came in today for George and he was a little rusty, but I’m looking forward to him getting better from this experience. I’m excited to get back to practice and to get together defensively to see what we can do against Yale next weekend.”
The first shot of the game resulted in a Cornell goal just 36 seconds into the contest, but Dartmouth responded less than three minutes later with Korzelius’ ninth tally of the season, with the assist going to Gallagher. The Big Red took off and six unanswered goals in as many minutes put the visitors up, 7-1.
Cornell found the back of the net twice more early in the second, but an O’Connell marker at 9:07 broke up the Red’s streak, giving both he and Martin their first point of the afternoon. Four Cornell tallies within two minutes made it a 15-2 game heading to the half. Four of Burnley’s five saves in the first two quarters came in the final 10 minutes of the second.
Dartmouth came out very well in the third quarter, outscoring Cornell, 5-4. Unassisted goals by Martin and Korzelius in the first 56 seconds started things off well and, after two quick Big Red markers, three Big Green tallies (two by Prince, one by Martin) within five minutes gave the control back to Dartmouth. A pair of Cornell goals, including one with zeroes already showing on the clock, gave the Red a 19-7 advantage.
Paul’s man-up tally started the fourth quarter in the Green’s favor, but Cornell countered with a man-up goal of its own a minute later, adding two even strength tallies within the next few minutes to make it a 22-8 contest. Dartmouth remained aggressive, continuing to test the Red goalies, and, following a two-minute Cornell penalty, netted three goals (two by O’Connell, one by Korzelius) with the extra player in 1:05 (22-11).
Next Saturday, Dartmouth will host Yale at 3 p.m.
