Monarchs Fall To Frienemy

Manchester win streak ended at three
Manchester, New Hampshire - Former Manchester Monarchs goaltender and current Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins netminder Jeff Zatkoff posted his first shutout of the season defeating Manchester , 3-0, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night.

Manchester (5-2-0-0) leads the Atlantic Division with 10 points. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (3-5-0-0) are ranked fifth in the East Division with six points.

“(Jeff) Zats was really good and so was (Martin) Jonesy,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris .  “They had the puck bouncing their way and I think the penalties in the second period really took a lot out of us.  It zapped our energy.  Zats was real good in the first when we barraged him.  He made a couple real great saves.”

VSO Concert Features Classics by Hindemith, Prokofiev and Dvořák

The Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s second concert in its 2012/2013 Masterworks series will feature three sparkling works by beloved classical composers.  The program includes Konzertmusik for Strings and Brass by Paul Hindemith, Lieutenant Kijé Suite by Sergei Prokofiev, and the radiant Symphony No. 6 by Antonín Dvořák.  VSO Principal Guest Conductor, Anthony Princiotti will lead the concert at the Flynn Center on Saturday, December 1 at 8 p.m.

The woodwinds sit out the first number, an exuberant flood of music in which Hindemith makes virtuosic demands on the brass section, but they have starring roles in Prokofiev’s wonderfully satirical narrative about a fictional soldier.  This orchestral showcase program concludes with a compelling work rich with superb melodies.  Many feel Dvořák’s Sixth is superior to his New World Symphony—but suffers from the lack of a catchy nickname.

Big Impact Made by Centrix Bank Community Outing Fundraising Program

Fisher Cats/Centrix Bank partnership aids organizations in raising funds & awareness
Manchester, New Hampshire - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, and Centrix Bank announced today that the Centrix Bank Community Outing Fundraising Program continues to make a big impact. Through ticket fundraisers and 50/50 raffles at Fisher Cats games, local non-profit and community groups had the opportunity to raise $113,795 for their respective causes in 2012. That figure raises the total dollars potentially generated by these groups to nearly $450,000 in the last four years.

"This dollar amount really indicates that more and more groups are continually looking for new ways to raise money to support their missions," said Joseph B. Reilly, President/CEO of Centrix Bank. "This is a great way for Centrix Bank to partner with the Fisher Cats and share the common goal of supporting the vital work of these organizations in our community."

Through the Centrix Bank Community Outing Fundraising Program, non-profit organizations can retain up to $4 for every ticket they sell to a Fisher Cats game. Groups can raise additional funds through in-game 50/50 raffles and other opportunities at the ballpark. Just as important as raising funds, these community organizations are able to increase awareness for their causes and spread their message during their game.

"This program has such a far-reaching positive impact, and it wouldn't be possible without Joe Reilly and Centrix Bank," said Fisher Cats President Rick Brenner. "We are blessed to have a beautiful facility and great partners to find new ways to impact our local communities through ventures like this."

With the success of programs like the Centrix Bank Community Outing Fundraising Program, the Fisher Cats and the Fisher Cats Foundation are approaching the $2 million mark in charitable giving since 2006. Those donations have been used to foster relationships with more than 3,000 non-profit organizations.

New England Culinary Institute Executive Chef Recognized as Partner and Alumnus of CREA

Montpelier, Vermont - The New England Culinary Institute announced today that its Vice President of Culinary Operations and Executive Chef, Jean-Louis Gerin, has been recognized in the premiere listing of Partners and Alumni of the Culinary Research and Education Academy (CREA).

The slow-cooking revolution was launched when CREA was founded in Paris more than two decades ago by French biochemist and food lover Bruno Goussault.  Since then, the school has trained chefs from some of the world’s most celebrated restaurants in the art and science of sous-vide.  It’s changing the way the world cooks and the definition of fine dining.

Sous-vide, French for “under vacuum”, is a method of cooking food sealed in airtight plastic bags in a water bath for longer than normal cooking times; 72 hours in some cases.  It requires an accurately regulated temperature much lower than normally used for cooking, typically around 55 °C (131 °F) to 60 °C (140 °F) for meats and higher for vegetables.
