Andrew Sopko allows just one run over five innings in Double-A debut
Manchester, NH - Josh Palacios doubled in the third inning, but that would be the only hit the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays Double-A affiliate) managed in a 2-0 loss to the Reading Fightin Phils (Philadelphia Phillies) on Monday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Palacios ripped the double off starter Mauricio Llovera, and advanced to third on a fly out by Kevin Smith, but the Fisher Cats could not get him home. The only other runner to reach third for New Hampshire was Nash Knight, who walked and stole second in the fourth.
Three Fisher Cats pitchers took the mound on Monday. Starter Andrew Sopko (L, 0-1) allowed one run in five innings, with four strikeouts. Reliever Francisco Rios allowed an unearned run in his two innings. Jake Fishman finished up with two scoreless innings, including three strikeouts.
Reading scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning. With Austin Listi on base after drawing a walk, Ali Castillo lined a triple to right center to make it 1-0.
The Fightin Phils also scored a single run in the top of the sixth inning. Listi reached on a hit-by-pitch, then advanced on a groundout and a passed ball. He scored on a fielding error to put Reading up 2-0.
Luke Leftwich (W, 1-0) worked two scoreless innings to pick up the win in relief. Kyle Dohy struck out the side around two walks in the bottom of the ninth inning for the save, his first of the season.
Notes:
Sopko, who pitched in the Dodgers organization last season with the Texas League champion Tulsa Drillers, made his first New Hampshire start. He was acquired in the off-season from the Dodgers in the Russell Martin trade.
Palacios leads the Fisher Cats with six hits in five games. He is the only member of the squad with a hit in all five games.
The Fisher Cats and Fightin Phils will play again on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. For ticket information, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
