Blue Jays prospect faces the minimum over six innings in Double-A debut
Manchester, NH - Behind six dominant innings from Yennsy Diaz, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays Double-A affiliate) earned a four-game series split with a 3-1 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (New York Mets) on Sunday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
In a game that took just two hours, Diaz faced the minimum over six innings, allowing just one single to Barrett Barnes before picking him off later in the second. The Blue Jays No. 26 prospect (MLB.com) struck out five batters and walked none in his first Double-A start.
Josh Palacios hit a two-run homer, New Hampshire's first of the year, to give the Fisher Cats a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Chad Spanberger added a two-out RBI double in the seventh to make it 3-0, before Barnes hit a solo home run to cap the scoring at 3-1 in the eighth.
Barnes was the only Rumble Pony with a hit on Sunday. Tayler Saucedo (H, 1) handled the seventh and eighth, while Kirby Snead (S, 1) finished off a perfect ninth to seal the win for New Hampshire.
Forrest Wall went 2-for-4, while Vinny Capra and Kacy Clemens each reached base twice with a walk and a hit.
Notes:
The fastest nine-inning home game in Fisher Cats history was 1:57 against the Norwich Navigators in 2005. The fastest road game was 1:52 at the Connecticut Defenders in 2006.
Diaz's spectacular start came one day after Zach Logue's terrific Double-A debut. Logue was perfect through five innings, and allowed just one unearned run in six frames on Saturday.
After two wins and two losses against Binghamton, the Fisher Cats will host the Reading Fightin' Phils (Philadelphia Phillies) in a three-game series starting on Monday at 6:35 p.m. For tickets and information, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
