60’s Icons descend on the Flying Monkey this weekend.

Plymouth, New Hampshire - The Flying Monkey Performance Center is excited to present psychedelic rock legends Jefferson Starship on Friday, November 2nd at 7:30.   Known as Rock N Roll royalty, they rose from the ashes of Jefferson Airplane.  Then the musical direction takes a step to the left with folk icon, singer-songwriter, and social-activist Peter Yarrow on Saturday, November 3rd at 7:30.  Peter Yarrow is known for his legacy of song with Peter, Paul, & Mary as well as a lifetime of social activism.   As if one folk legend were not enough, America’s beloved counter-culture icon Arlo Guthrie returns to the Monkey stage on Thursday, November 8th at 7:30. This intimate performance at The Flying Monkey promises to be an evening of new songs, beloved classics and old folklore. Tickets for Jefferson Starship start at $39; Peter Yarrow starts at $25; Arlo starts at $45.

Beginning in 1974 as a break-off of Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship is arguably one of the most well-known bands to come out of that decade. Known for their hits We Built This City, Sara, Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, Miracles, Jane, Somebody To Love, White Rabbit, Volunteers and Count On Me, their first album Blows Against the Empire was the first ever rock music recording nominated for literary science fiction’s prestigious Hugo Award.

The band consists of Jefferson Airplane co-founder Paul Kanter, David Freiberg, Mark “Slick” Aguilar, Donny Baldwin, Chris Smith and Cathy Richardson.

Peter Yarrow helped bring Peter, Paul & Mary to international acclaim while advancing the great social movements of the time. He wrote such classics as “Day is Done,” “Puff, the Magic Dragon,”  “Light One Candle,” and “The Great Mandala.”  His music stirs the soul and has moved audiences to action to make the world a better place. Much of the trio’s music centered around social issues including war, homelessness, the environment, world hunger, and apartheid. They won six Grammy Awards between 1963 and 2003 plus 12 nominations.

Peter Yarrow on his current understanding of success:  “The work never ends," the 73-year-old folk icon said in a telephone interview, "but when I finish my period, if it's like a craft launched at sea and the wind has filled its sails and there's a good likelihood that it will continue on its journey, that would give me great satisfaction."

Long fascinated by the myth of Orpheus who with song could coax wild beasts and entice trees to dance, folk legend Arlo Guthrie embarked on his own mythical journey. As a masterful storyteller, humorous philosopher, and uncompromising artist, Guthrie continues to prove that folk music is alive and well.  The son of beloved singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie grew up surrounded by many of the musical giants that shaped the era of the "Folk Boom", such as Pete Seeger, Leadbelly, Ronnie Gilbert, and Ramblin' Jack Elliot.

Guthrie's own career exploded in 1967 with the premier of his album "Alice's Restaurant" at the Newport Folk Festival. Ever since that day he has been a true American treasure who shares timeless stories and unforgettable classic songs as he carries on the Guthrie family legacy. With his singular voice as both a singer-songwriter and social commentator, he has maintained a dedicated fan base that spans the globe. A celebrated figure in American music, Arlo connects with communities far and wide leaving a lasting impression of hope and inspiration. His artistic ventures help bridge an often-divided world through his powerful spirit of song, and his musical ingenuity reaches new creative heights as he continues to entertain generations.

Expect an exciting week with three of our nation’s greatest musical treasures, singing all the songs that moved a generation.
