Currier to Present Latest Collaboration Between NH Painter James Aponovich and NH Artist Laureate and Furniture Master David Lamb

Manchester, New Hampshire - On Thursday evening Nov. 1 at the Currier Museum of Art, the New Hampshire Furniture Masters Association and the Currier will unveil White Mountain Breakfront, also known as “Lambovich IV,” a monumental cabinet combining the artistry (as well as the names) of David Lamb and James Aponovich.

This collaborative piece of artwork features dramatic scenes of New Hampshire painted by Aponovich within a breakfront designed and crafted by Lamb. White Mountain Breakfront was commissioned by Shannon Chandley and Tom Silvia of Amherst, NH and celebrates the Granite State’s natural beauty, history and culture. It will be on view at the Currier through January 6, 2013.

Together, Aponovich and Lamb represent the best of New Hampshire art and craftsmanship. Lamb helped found the New Hampshire Furniture Masters Association in 1993 and in early 2012, he was re-appointed as New Hampshire’s Artist Laureate. Aponovich is a Lifetime Fellow of the State Arts Council and former NH Artist Laureate. Both artists have work in the Currier’s permanent collection.

“The Currier is pleased to recognize these two accomplished artists. Each is a master in his own medium and together they have created a masterwork of the highest quality, both in design and craftsmanship, said Susan Strickler, Director and CEO of the Currier Museum of Art. “This monumental breakfront represents months of collaboration in which each artist has complemented and enhanced the work of the other. The details of the carving and painted scenes make reference to distinctive aspects of New Hampshire history and culture, which we can all enjoy and appreciate,” Strickler added.

“The Furniture Masters are proud to count the State’s Artist Laureate among our members,” said Brian Sargent, Chair of the NH Furniture Masters Association.  “As a founding member and past chair of the group, David Lamb has made numerous contributions to our organization.  He is widely recognized as one of the preeminent American furniture makers working today, and deservedly so.  David’s current collaboration with James Aponovich marks the fourth time these two gifted artists have joined forces in the name of art and this breakfront demonstrates the incredible artistic talent that exists here in New Hampshire.”

There is a strong tradition for placing painted panels within pieces of furniture, particularly in Italian and German work, but it was the request of Lamb’s patron Diane Griffith of Nashua that first prompted the collaboration between Aponovich and Lamb in 2008.

The presentation of White Mountain Breakfront will be accompanied by a display of sketches, drawings and models that the artists used in the planning and design of the piece.  Also on view will be additional paintings by Aponovich and furniture by Lamb.
