Colby Sawyer Baseball Falls to SUNY Poly in Both Ends of Twin Bill

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - March 10, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team fell to SUNY Poly 5-4 and 7-3 in a doubleheader at the Chain of Lakes complex in Winter Have, Florida.

The Chargers will look to rebound back in Auburndale tomorrow against Olivet with a single nine-inning game at 10:30 a.m.

GAME ONE - SUNY Poly 5, Colby-Sawyer 4

The Chargers went in front 2-0 in the top of the fourth on a Jack Cahill sac fly and a wild pitch.

The Wildcats cut the deficit in half with a John Andrews RBI single up the middle.

Charlie Danaher staked Colby-Sawyer to a 3-1 lead with a run-scoring double to left in the fifth. SUNY Poly answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score at 3-3.

In the top of the sixth, Danny McCrystal put the Chargers back on top with an RBI single to left.

The Wildcats once again had the answer in the bottom of the sixth scoring twice, including the eventual game-winning run.

Noah Valvo earned the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief for SUNY Poly.

AJ Cavossa was solid through 3.2 innings. He gave up one run on one hit and struck out seven. Kyle McShera took the loss in 2 innings pitched, while Derek Griffin made a scoreless appearance out of the bullpen.

Danaher led the Chargers with two hits. Jesse Galanti registered his first collegiate knock.

GAME TWO - SUNY Poly 7, Colby-Sawyer 3

Charlie Danaher continued his great start to the season at the plate with a double that scored Brendan Barrett in the first.

The Wildcats then took the lead in the top of the fourth with three RBI singles.

Colby-Sawyer responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Tim Unczur knocked in Cam Brooks and Ryan Cummiskey came around on an error.

Bradley Dietz doubled to left to put the Wildcats in front in the top of the fifth. SUNY Poly tacked on three runs in the top of the sixth to lead 7-3. Nick LaBella had a two-run single in the frame.

Owen Cottle tossed 1.2 innings of relief with no hits and three strikeouts.

Tim Unczur had three hits in four at-bats to lead Colby-Sawyer. Cam Brooks and Jack Cahill recorded their first collegiate hits in the game.

March 11th Recap

Baseball Defeated by Olivet

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – March 11, 2019 – Colby-Sawyer was defeated by Olivet, 19-1, on day three of the team's spring trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational.    

Olivet improves to 1-4 and will play a doubleheader with Husson tomorrow in Kissimmee. Colby-Sawyer drops to 0-5. The Chargers will take tomorrow off and resume action in Auburndale on Wednesday against Mount St. Joseph.

The Comets scored twice in the top of the second thanks to Matt Hewitt. He knocked in a run on a double and later scored on an error.

Hewitt had another big hit in the third with a two-run double. Olivet would score three times in the frame to take a 5-0 lead.

Colby-Sawyer put a run on the board in the bottom of the third off the bat of Brendan Barrett. He singled home Tim Unczur who reached on a double.

Olivet added four runs in the sixth and 10 in the ninth to win the game 19-1. Brandan Settles knocked in three runs, while Dayton Regier had a bases clearing triple in the final inning.

Max Daust earned the win for the Comets with eight innings of work. He gave up one run and struck out five.

Joe Scurto was saddled with the loss with five runs in two innings. Owen Cottle threw three innings and was not charged with a run. He struck out three batters. Tim Unczur gave up a hit and struck out two in two innings. Charlie Graffius threw a scoreless inning.

Riley Bennett led Olivet with three hits on the day.

Unczur continued to swing the bat well for the Chargers and finished 3-for-3.
