Softball Tops Caldwell, Falls In Extras To Le Moyne

Game 1:  SNHU 5 Caldwell University 0
Junior Maddy Barone (Halifax, Mass.) pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out seven, in Southern New Hampshire's 5-0 win over Caldwell.  She improves to 3-1 on the season, lowering her ERA to 1.83.   

The Penmen scored the runs in two frames.  They came up with three in the top of the third inning.  Junior Erin Tyrrell (Milford, N.H.) and freshman Chloe Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) started the inning with singles.  After sophomore Shay Sauvageau (Griswold, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice, senior Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) singled to make it 1-0.  After a groundout, freshman Emily Carbonneau (Lowell, Mass.) brought two runs home with a single.

Tyrrell singled again to start the top of the seventh inning, and junior Logan Filo-Loos (Dudley, Mass.) drew a walk as a pinch-hitter.  A successful sacrifice by Sauvageau moved the runners up.  Tyrrell scored when Garczynwski reached on a fielder's choice.  A sacrifice fly by junior Jordan Wade (East Taunton, Mass.) plated Filo-Loos, to put the Penmen up 5-0.

Game 2:  Le Moyne 5, SNHU 4 (8 innings)
For the third time on Florida trip, the Penmen went to extra innings to decide a game.  Le Moyne College came away with a 5-4 win over SNHU. 

The Penmen took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Sauvageau walked, and Garczynski doubled her over to third.  A sacrifice fly by Carbonneau plated the first run of the night.

The Dolphins scored four times in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead.  They cashed in on three hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error. 

SNHU made it 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth when taking advantage of two Le Moyne errors.  And the Penmen drew in the bottom of the seventh.  Garczynski doubled to start the inning, with pinch runner freshman Jenna McDonnough (Abington, Mass.) scoring on an error.  SNHU couldn't finish off the comeback, leaving two in scoring position.

Le Moyne's game-winning hit came in the top of the eighth when Ally Nicolosi singled to drive in the tie-break runner.  The Penmen could not get junior Gabriella Vachon (Newton, Mass.) home from third after a sacrifice bunt by Tyrell in the bottom of the inning. 

Ali Atherton (1-1) took the loss, working five innings in relief of starter Olivia Strasser for SNHU.

Notes:

- Southern New Hampshire stands at 3-3 on the Florida trip. 
- Garczynski finished the day 5-for-8 with three doubles and RBI.  She leads the Penmen with six doubles and ten RBI.

What's Next:
- The Penmen will take Tuesday off, returning to the diamond on Wednesday for a twinbill with Molloy College beginning at 9:00 a.m.
- The first scheduled home game for the Penmen will be Sunday, March 24, with a doubleheader against Queens College.
