BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College women's lacrosse team began 2019 regular season action Friday afternoon at Daly Field but was topped 19-0 by Simmons University.

The Sharks ran out to a 9-0 lead by the midway point of the first half, and the hosts then padded their cushion through the remaining 45 minutes while keeping SVC off the scoreboard.

The Mountaineers (0-1) are right back on the road Saturday with a 3 p.m. start at Bard College.

Southern Vermont senior goalie Sydnee Julian (Mexico, N.Y.) posted 11 saves between the pipes in the loss (0-1). Sophomore Alex Safford (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) led the team with four ground balls, and she added a pair of draw controls and two caused turnovers to her line.

SVC junior Juliena D'Alessio (Berlin, N.Y.) also had two caused turnovers while collecting a pair of ground balls as senior Aubrey Vierstra (Saugerties, N.Y.) and freshman Brittany Fulton (Bridgeport, Conn.) each had two ground balls and a caused turnover in the effort.

Simmons got on the board in the first minute of play, and the Sharks would add another three goals by the 26:21 mark. Julian made seven saves in the first half, but SU was still able to put another handful past her through the remainder of the period. Simmons then held SVC to just one shot in the second stanza while increasing its advantage for the decisive victory.
