NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Castleton softball team secured wins
over Penn State-Schuylkill, 8-1, and Hilbert, 7-3, on Sunday. The third
game versus Wentworth was suspended due to a power outage and rain with
the Spartans holding a 7-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
The suspended game versus Wentworth is not scheduled to be completed.
Calli Van Gorden was 4-for-6 on the day with three doubles and a triple. She had two RBIs and walked twice. MaKenna Thorne was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Kylie Wright, Tori Swaine, and Miranda Fish each ended the sweep with three RBIs.
Wright also improved her record to 3-0 in the circle with the complete-game win in game two over Hilbert. Olivia Bowen grabbed the win in game one after allowing a run on five hits over six innings of work for Castleton (5-2).
The Spartans are scheduled to complete the Myrtle Beach trip on
Monday with games versus Penn. State-Harrisburg at 9:30 a.m. and Coe at
1:30 p.m.
Castleton 8, Penn St.-Schuylkill 1
Castleton scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings
behind an RBI single by Fish, a run-scoring double from Van Gorden, and a
Devin Millerick two-RBI single.
Penn St.-Schuylkill (0-3) got on the board in the fifth on a single
from Megan Ditzler, but the Spartans answered with one in the bottom
half of the frame when Kayla Fac hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Castleton completed the scoring in the sixth with a three-spot.
Thorne came around to score from second on a fielder's choice and Tori Swaine drove in Fish one batter later on a single to center. Then, Van Gorden smashed her second run-scoring double of the game.
Castleton 7, Hilbert 3
After two and a half scoreless innings, Castleton broke out for four runs in the third. Katelynn LaPan
hit a leadoff single and moved to third on Van Gorden's double. Then,
LaPan slid under the tag at home to score when Fish hit a bouncer to the
pitcher. After Millerick walked to load the bases, Wright helped her
own cause and cleared the bases with a double to right field.
Castleton added a fifth run in the fourth inning after Swaine's
hot-shot deflected off the pitcher and rolled towards the second basemen
who recorded an out, but LaPan raced home from third.
In the fifth inning, three singles set up a bases loaded situation
for the Hawks with no outs. They scored twice, both on plays that
resulted in an out. Alyssa Barnas bounced into a run-scoring fielder's
choice for one out before Hannah Prenoveau scored as Castleton converted
a rundown between first and second.
Fish walked, stole second, and moved to third on an overthrow before
Swaine pulled a single through the left side to make it a 7-2 game in
the bottom of the sixth.
Hilbert plated one more tally in the seventh on a ground-rule double by Maia Delaney.
