Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Springfield

Nine different players scored for Middlebury, as the sixth-ranked Panthers (1-1) cruised to a 16-1 win over Springfield (3-2) Friday afternoon on Kohn Field. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Connecticut College at noon, while the Pride visit Trinity next Wednesday.

Middlebury scored four goals in the first 4:39 and never looked back. Kate Zecca and Jane Earley converted free-position attempts, as Zecca scored again with a feed from Sara DiCenso, making it a 5-0 game at the 22:30 mark. Leading 7-0, Zecca struck again, this time when her team was a player down as she cut hard to the goal. Emily Barnard found a cutting Kirsten Murphy at the 9:55 mark, before Erin Nicholas and Jenna McNicholas scored on free-position shots to put the hosts up 11-0 with 4:46 remaining. Sarah Weppler completed the first-half scoring, finding the back of the net after an assist from Grace Getman.

Leading 12-0 at the break, Middlebury cruised in the second half, with Springfield breaking up the shutout when Jamie Jitras connected with Katie Martel as time expired.

Zecca finished with three goals and two assists to pace the Panthers, while Earley, Nicholas, McNicholas, Murphy and Madeline Riordan each scored twice. Emma White earned a game-high four ground balls and caused three turnovers in the contest.

Taylor Kane picked up three ground balls for the visitors, while Taylor Pichel and Andie Stone each caused two turnovers.

Julia Keith made one save in the first half for Middlebury, while Kate Furber made a pair of second-half stops. Brenna Keefe finished with six saves for Springfield.
