Kayla Wood threw her second shutout of the season in game one, allowing just four hits over seven innings of work and striking out nine batters in a 6-0 win. Cassidy Tedeschi got the start in the circle in game two, working five innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out three batters. Taylor Paquette closed it out, working two shutout innings to give Castleton a 5-1 win.
Brittany Brayman posted a 4-for-7 day with a two-run home run, while Katie Gagne had three hits on
the day with a total of four RBIs to power to help power the offense.
The Spartans are now 13-11 on the season, while Plymouth St. falls to 9-21 overall.
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in game one, plating a pair of first inning runs. Carone scored on a fielders choice by Chelsea Grady to make it 1-0, before Gagne laced a singled into right center to score Brayman and make it 2-0.
The Spartans would tack on two more in the second inning, as Gagne again ripped a single into right field to score Timi Carone and Jessica Babcock and make it a 4-0 game.
Both sides went down in order in the third inning, but the Spartan bats were back at it in the fourth. Brayman and Grady tallied back-to-back singles with two outs before coming around to score on a single up the middle by Carpenter.
The Panthers strung together back-to-back singles with two outs in the sixth inning, but Carone made a strong throw to cut the runner down trying to go from first to third to end the inning. The Spartans then went down in order in the top of the seventh before Wood struck out the side in order to complete the shutout.
The Spartans got out to an early lead in game two, striking for a trio if runs in the top of the first. After the first two batters walked to start the game, Brayman pushed a bunt single beyond the pitcher and into a vacated area, scoring Carone from second. Gagne tallied an RBI groundout to give the Spartans a second run, before Carpenter sent a single over the second baseman's head to make it 3-0. Plymouth St. got one back in the bottom of the first, as they pushed across a run on a fielder's choice to make it 3-1.
The two sides would remain scoreless until the fifth inning, when Brayman launched a two-out, two-run home run down the left field line to extend the lead to 5-1 and close out the scoring in the contest.
The Spartans are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Williams for a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
