Colby-Sawyer Baseball Falls to Southern Vermont, 13-6

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer College baseball team fell to Southern Vermont, 13-6 in a single nine inning non-conference game on Thursday afternoon.

Southern Vermont improves to 18-14 and will resume New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Saturday with a twin bill at Elms. Colby-Sawyer drops to 10-17 and will play a home-and-home with Daniel Webster over the weekend with a doubleheader in Nashua before a single game in New London on Sunday.

The Mountaineers began the game with three runs on RBI singles from RJ Pingitore (Perth, N.Y.) and
John Arancio (Oradell, N.J.) and a run scoring force out from Austin Teitelbaum (Westhampton, N.Y.).

Colby-Sawyer got a run back in its first at-bat on a sac fly from Brady Dion (Sabattus, Maine) and added another run in the second on another sac fly from Austin Butler (Saunderstown, R.I.).

Southern Vermont would add three more in the third on a pair of run-scoring singles and a sac fly from Anthony Mercuri (Ridge, N.Y.).

Dion picked up his second RBI of the game in the third on a grounder to short stop to cut into the lead 6-3.

The visitors tacked on a run in the fifth and three in the six before the Chargers got an RBI single to right from Joey Fenuccio (Keene, N.H.).

Southern Vermont scored one in the eighth and two more in the ninth to take a 13-4 lead into the bottom of the inning.

Colby-Sawyer recorded its third sac fly of the game, this time off the bat of Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) to knock in Butler. Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) also scored in the inning on a wild pitch, but the Mountaineers found the final two outs to end the game 13-6.

Senior Mike Bowse (Merrimack, N.H.) pitched two innings of one-hit relief for the Chargers, while Jeff Dunn (Bellingham, Mass.) also tossed an inning of relief.

Southern Vermont received two innings and two strikeouts from Joe Braim (Schuylerville, N.Y.).
