BENNINGTON, Vt. — For the first time since 2011, the
Southern Vermont College baseball team will be playing in postseason
action as the Mountaineers secured the third season in this weekend's
New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) championship tournament.
The Mountaineers clinched their playoff berth with a
league record of 10-8 (18-18 overall). That Conference win mark tied the
team's NECC victories record (2011) while the overall mark currently
ties the program's all-time wins record.
"I am extremely proud of this group," commented SVC
fourth-year head coach Dave Gage who will
be returning to the NECC
postseason for the third time but just the first as the Mountaineer
skipper. "We graduated some major pieces to our program last year, and
this team continued growing the program in the right direction."
SVC will head to top-seeded Mitchell College on
Friday for the first day of the double-elimination bracket, matching up
against No. 2 Elms College (12-6 NECC, 30-10 overall) around 3 p.m. in
the second game of the day. MC (13-5 NECC, 24-9 overall) will host the
weekend once again, taking the No. 1 seed for the third straight year.
"Our leadership has been amazing, and the
coach-ability among the entire team is what I am truly thankful for,"
Gage added. "I look forward to returning to the Conference playoffs and
making SVC proud."
Mitchell will take on No. 4 Lesley University (10-8
NECC, 19-17 overall) in the opening game on Friday, first pitch
scheduled for 12 p.m. SVC took the head-to-head tiebreaker over Lesley
to grab the third seed after both teams finished with identical league
records.
The Mountaineers had varying degrees of success
against the championship field, taking two of the three-game set against
LU while salvaging a win in their series against Mitchell and falling
in all three games against Elms.
The two losing teams of Friday's games will then face
off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning for the right to remain in the hunt
for the crown. Friday's winners will then play at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday
with that game's loser playing the winner of the earlier matchup at
3:30 p.m. The two remaining teams will then play at 11 a.m. Sunday
morning with a second game following if needed for a third team to get a
second loss.
