CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans trailed just 1-0 after five minutes of
action, but the Skidmore offense scored four more times in the first
quarter to pull away for the eventual 18-6 victory on Tuesday evening at
Spartan Stadium.
Castleton was outshot 51-20 and picked up just 29 groundballs as the
team dropped to 5-4 overall. The Thoroughbreds, meanwhile, picked up 38
ground balls, forced 24 turnovers and won 16 of 26 faceoffs to improve
to 5-5 overall.
Senior Taylor Swarter paced the offense with a hat trick, and Tom Pardew added one goal, one assist
and three ground balls. Peyton Faasse had three ground balls and three caused turnovers while Isaac Devoid won 7 of 10 faceoffs while picking up a team-high seven ground balls.
Ten different players scored for Skidmore, led by Brendan Halloran
and Jack Metzler who each had three goals and one assist. Eric Megnia
added four assists and one goal while Logan Hart had three caused
turnovers and five ground balls.
The Thoroughbreds led just 1-0 early, before back-to-back goals 38
seconds apart pushed the lead to 3-0 with nine minutes remaining in the
period. They added two more goals, before Pardew put Castleton on the
board with just two seconds left in the quarter to trail 5-1.
Skidmore scored six straight to open the second quarter, pushing its
11-1 advantage with four minutes left in the period. However, Swarter
scored his first goal with 13 seconds left off a feed from Kyle Lutinski to trail 11-2 at the half.
In the second half the Thoroughbreds extended their lead to 14-3,
before three goals trimmed the Spartan deficit to 14-6 with 14 minutes
left in regulation. Skidmore added four goals in the final seven minutes
for the 12-goal victory.
Senior Peter Latulippe
took the loss in net as he allowed 11 goals in 25:54 while making six
saves. Freshman Romello came on in relief, stopping nine shots while
giving up seven goals in 34:06.
The Thoroughbreds' Chris Baughan played the first 45 minutes and gave
up five goals while making one save to secure the win. Josh Worley made
one save and allowed a goal in the fourth quarter.
Castleton returns to action today at 4 pm when the team hosts Lyndon at 4 pm.
