POULTNEY, Vt. – Megan Scully powered in five goals as Green Mountain edged past UMaine-Farmington, 9-7, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday night at Spartan Stadium.
Scully's five goals led all scorers while Catie Brewster notched a pair of goals and four draw controls in the win. Martha Howe and Maegan Laymon each scored a goal with Howe registering a team-high four groundballs and Laymon causing a pair of turnovers.
The Beavers received three goals from Mara Balboni who also
contributed three groundballs and a
pair of draw controls. Alaina Shorey
scored twice, while Carly Raymon scored once and added an assist.
Rebecca Young tallied the Beavers other goal with Sierra Gilley
supporting the offense with a pair of assists.
UMaine-Farmington (2-4, 0-3 NAC) opened the scoring at the 27:33 mark
of the opening half when Shorey found the back of the cage off of a
feed from Gilley.
Green Mountain (2-5, 2-1 NAC) answered back just under two minutes later when Brewster made good on her free position shot.
The Beavers looked poised to break the game open with two goals to
extend their lead to 3-1 with 16:28 to play in the opening stanza.
Shorey and Balboni both converted in the open field after receiving
feeds on the fast break.
The Eagles responded with a 4-1 run throughout the remainder of the
period to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. Scully scored three straight
goals for the hosts during the run.
Howe gave the Eagles a brief two-goal cushion after firing a free
position shot past the visitor's goalie, but that lead was short-lived
as UMaine-Farmington scored three unanswered goals to regain the lead at
7-6 with 15:10 remaining in the game.
Scully's fourth of the game knotted the score at 7-7 less than a
minute later. Brewster would then score the ultimate game winner on an
unassisted effort with 12:35 to go in the game. With the Beavers
pressing for the equalizer, Scully notched her fifth of the game with
3:38 left and the Eagles were able to withstand a late rally and ran out
the clock.
Earning the win in net for the Eagles was Chelsea Wimble
who stopped eight shots, including all of the Beaver's free position
shots. Alyssa Arsenault backstopped the Beavers in the loss making eight
saves as well.
Green Mountain will host NAC foe Colby-Sawyer at Spartan Stadium on
Tuesday at 3 p.m. in its next contest, while UMaine-Farmington will
travel to Southern Maine on Monday for a non-conference game scheduled
to start at 4 p.m.
